Valentine's day has become a worldwide event that is recognized by millions of people. Its the one day of the year where couples can show each other a little bit of romance and be a real couple. Chocolates, flowers and jewelry are the biggest sellers for this day filled with love.

But why is it only acceptable to be romantic on this one day? Why should men and women be held to a certain standard on this day alone? And why, as a society, do we accept this?

Romance, in all its glorious forms, should be a part of every relationship 365 days a year. It could be as simple as a hug or telling your partner how much you appreciate them. It doesn't matter if you're a new couple or have been married for 50 years.

In more recent years, businesses have made huge profits off of Valentine's day alone. Jewelry shops advertising the fact that it's the perfect day to buy your partner a necklace or a ring. Stores display heart shaped boxes full of chocolates, telling you to buy them for your sweetheart. Because, diabetes isn't a factor when it comes to Valentine's day. Flower shops claim a bouquet of roses is just the thing to tell someone you love them.

But why do we, as humans, need all this just to tell the person we love that we do, in fact, love them? Shouldn't we be doing this every day? Doesn't the person that we have chosen to be with deserve to be shown how much they are loved and valued every day?

Shouldn't this behavior be seen as the norm?
