"Red, look at me. What's that supposed to mean?"
We are interrupted again, but this time by small explosions. Whoever's doing this wanted us out of the cabin. They probably wanted us to leave as soon as we knew about the fire to shoot us down. I'm not sorry I didn't tell Liam about the tunnel.
"We need to get out of here!" I tell her urgently, starting to run with her always after me.
Minutes later I'm lifting a piece of wood, which at first glance serves only to cover a old well. After leaving, I help Naomi climb the few steps to get out of the tunnel and grab her by the waist and help her balance herself.
"Are you okay?"
"Umm, yes. Where now?"
I look towards the cabin that's on fire right now, and I see three guys with guns. They're probably waiting for us to get out of the cabin to take us down.
Facing again Naomi, who in spite of everything maintains the posture, and clarify it:
"There is a stable not far from here, which I hope they have not found. I've got what we need to get out of here. We need to be quick because they're going to realize that somehow we left the cabin. They won't think we're still there."
I hear her sigh and wave. Grabbing her hand and intertwining our fingers, I take the lead in getting us out of there.
Through fallen branches, mud, vegetation that seem to want us to get caught, we reach our destination.
"I need you to stay here and make no noise." I order her to lean on a tree to stay out of sight of whoever might be around. Seeing her hesitate, I add, "Trust me, I'm just going to open the gate and get the car out. I don't want us both to be unprotected."
"Wait," she grabs my arm, "and who's going to protect you?"
The situation is definitely not funny, however the corner of my lips rises in a discreet smile while I take my gun out of the holster and show it to her.
"This!" taking a little knife out of my pocket and putting it in her hand, I say, "And you get this, not that you're going to need it, but... No matter what, DO. NOT. MOVE!"
And I walk away, hoping I'm not making a mistake.
