Next two months it got worse. Life was very nice to Death, smiling sweetly and acting friendly, but whenever Death would mention his true feelings, Life would either crack jokes or avoid the subject entirely. Death was even invited to Life's place twice. He agreed because he hoped it would change things and... because it was hard to refuse. But everything went the same way as the first time, instead of bringing joy, it left Death more empty and sad then he was before. The third time he said no.
"'No'? Oh," Life looked confused. They were in Life's office again. "I'm... sorry, I didn't realize that it made you uncomfortable," he paused for a second. Death was looking down, breathing heavily; his shoulders went up and down as he closed his eyes. "I.. won't offer that again, don't worry. But if there was something you dislike, you could just tell me-"
"BUT I TRIED!!" Life flinched at the shout but that was enough for Death. He will have his answer, even if it is a refusal, AT LEAST IT IS A PROPER REFUSAL, right now. He grabbed Life by the wrist and made him sit on the sofa then sat next to him.
"Listen to me now and don't try to run away please. I love you. I have loved you for a long time. Things as they are now hurt me very much. I need to know your feelings. If you don't love me just say that. I can't live in a vacuum anymore; it's too hard to breathe."
Life's face turned from concerned to emotionless. He slowly took his hand away, but didn't make an attempt to stand up. Instead he said.
"For how long have you known me? Yes, for about a year. That's why you're wrong. You can think that I'm something interesting but it's only because I'm someone new to you. Very soon you'll understand that there's nothing attractive about me."
"WHAT do you mean?!"
" ..? Nothing worth of love. Neither looks nor personality, nothing. Very soon you'll see that and then you'll get disappointed and leave."
Death was so indignant he almost forgot how to articulate.
" How can you say that!.."
Life winced.
"I've been there already. More times than I ever wanted. And I... don't really need another heartbreak right now. Death, you're so good. So clever, so handsome, so sweet. You can find someone much better than me."
"But I don't want someone else...!"
Life stubbornly shook his head.
"Please reconsider. Before it's too late... for both of us."
He stood up and left the room without looking back.
