"Kimi no Na wa. Recovering the Future" is a work of the "fan fiction" type: an alternative, unofficial history based on the 2016 film "Your Name" (Kimi no Na wa) by director Makoto Shinkai, but written by a fan or admirer of that work. This story resumes in the events that occur during and after the last scene of the film.

"Your Name" was a box office hit in Japan, and has since been enjoyed by millions of people around the world. Therefore, to understand the plot of this book, I consider it is essential to have seen the movie first, for two important reasons:

1. The characters, situations, places and conversations are completely related to the events that take place during the film. Reading this book is in itself a horrible SPOILER for anyone who hasn't seen it and who might want to see the movie later.

2. Without having seen the movie, it is difficult, if maybe not impossible, to understand many of the plots, conflicts and dialogues in this book.

WARNING: If you have not seen the movie "Your Name" (Kimi no Na Wa), stop reading at this point immediately. Watch the movie without any prejudice before continuing. Otherwise, you will lose a unique experience.

In my opinion, point 1 is the most important. There is no doubt that many people were happy or relieved at the end of the film, having been on what I personally consider to be a true emotional roller coaster. The movie "Your name" can be defined as a romantic thriller. Living the experience of seeing it for the first time is reason enough not to ruin it by reading this or any "sequel" too soon. In this book, the characters will remember and understand things that they experienced during the film to the deep, such as maximum level spoilers.

In this alternative story I intend to answer questions that many have asked themselves after seeing the film: What happened to the main characters afterwards? Did they stay together? Did they get their memory back?

Makoto Shinkai himself has responded to one of them. The couple makes a cameo appearance in their next movie, "Weathering with you," and the associated light novel says there are photos of Mitsuha and Taki's marriage in 2024. But how did they get to that point? Makoto Shinkai has never revealed what he thinks about it, and maybe he never will.

This work is not canon by any means, but it is directly inspired by the "Your Name" movie and its light novel, by the official manga, and by the book "Your name. Another Side: Earthbound" by Makoto Shinkai and Arata Kanoh. I have tried to make the story as loyal, coherent and consistent with those sources as possible. But if someday there is an official sequel, that official story will surely be different.

I hope those who asked themselves the questions above, can enjoy reading it, and you can find here a satisfactory answer to those and other questions that remained after watching the movie.
