Chapter 3

"Firefighters, is there anyone?!" Lieutenant Smith repeated again while she was controlling the second floor of a burning house in the residential area of South Huddersfield.

"Help! I'm here!" someone croaked, coughing and then screaming when a piece of the ceiling deteriorated because of the heat. The scream helped Smith and Sinclair, who were together, to identify the position of the civilian in danger: there was a woman hidden and blocked under the bed.

"Here we are, madam. How are you? Are you injured? What's your name?" asked Smith with concern.

"I'm stuck but I'm fine ... I think." the terrified woman replied after a few seconds; other coughs due to smoke inhalation interrupted the lady "My name is Cally, I didn't go out because I was looking for my daughter... Maddie" she gasped between lack of oxygen and panic.

"Cally, listen to me." Jamie bent to the hot ground to find the woman's eyes beyond the translucent oxygen mask that covered her entire face. The tone was firm and reassuring, as well as not seeming to admit replies or disappointments. "We have to get out immediately. Now Sinclar and I free this side and she will crawl towards me. Then, Sinclair will take her out. Everything's clear?".

"No! No! Please, my daughter! I have to find Maddie!" the woman sobbed and coughed but continued "She is 6 years old!! She went to her room to get her favorite toy when it all happened!" That detail changed it all; from the radio hanging from the collar of the fireproof suit the warning was clearly heard: within a minute the whole facility would have collapsed, Goodwin ordered his teams to get out quickly.

"All right. Listen to me, Cally: do as I told you, go out with Sinclair and I'll go find Maddie. Promised!" Jamie repeated with resolute tone;

"Sinclair, help me to move here. Now!" The lieutenant ordered the younger colleague to help her move some debris that was blocking the access to the bed.

It all happened swiftly. Ryan had no time to argue, so focused himself on freeing the civilian and taking her out as soon as possible.

On the other hand, Jamie ran against time, against flames and rubble to reach the girl's room. She found her crouched and fainted by the small desk. She wrapped her in a blanket, picked her up and then dashed out of the house while the other firefighters had almost completely put out the fire.

"I need help quickly! She doesn't breathe!" Jamie came out of the burning structure without realizing she had made it or stopping for a moment. She looked around for the paramedics, especially for Amy: Jamie located the ginger colleague near the ambulance, where she was intent on assisting her mother in a full respiratory crisis from smoke inhalation.
