At the peak of a mountain in a lake lay the home of the Temple of Fairness; the command post for the highest and mightest of paladins. And subsequently where our story takes place. For on the darkest and stormiest of nights a paladin was about to leave the fold.
Footsteps echoed on the marble tile as a young paladin rushed towards the stables in the hope of stopping her sibling. "Morgan, get back here."
"No thank you!" They were about to push through the doors as their sister caught up and grabbed their shoulder.
"You can't just leave to do whatever you want! You have a responsibility..."
"NO!" They startled her enough that she let go of their shoulder and took a step back. "I am Not a knight. I am Not his compass for when he can't find the right roads. I am Not a sacrifice to be had to keep him uninjured. I AM NOT YOUR PAWN! And I refuse to be here any longer. Don't expect me to come back." And with that Morgan swung the door open into the night. The rain washing away their dread and their pain. The thunder masking their steps as they found a horse willing to go in this weather
And in the morning Far away from the temple and even farther from the town the sun rose on a new day, a fresh day, a day of excitement and awe and compilation of what they would do given they had no money and only 10 arrows. This was going to be a long trek to town.
It took four days, three arrows, two rabbits, and one really bruised leg from tripping over a tree's root just getting to the edge of the city; the capital of Celestias. They hopped off their horse and tied them to a tree just out of sight. "I'll be back before nightfall. Stay here and stay safe."
And with that they were off cautiously pulling up their hood and slipping into the crowd of travelers heading into the capital. They held their breath slightly passing the guards. They couldn't be sure if their family was looking for them or not and with their teleportation circles it was better to be safe. They weaved themselves through the marketplace buying the bare minimum with the little they brought with them to make it over the mountain range into the next kingdom. This would be a journey they needed they reassured themselves.
And right when they exited the capital their eyes landed on it. A poster of the Mad Wizard stating they were last seen in the crooked forest. Just perfect. I have to pass right through there to get to Cancoden. Cancoden, a safe spot for evil, loose magic, and renegades. With a brisk pace Morgan picked up their stepps getting back to their horse not knowing weather or not they should or even could pray for a miracle to avoid this demon.
Meanwhile far into the crooked forest the walking fortress of the "Mad Wizard" lurked. It's best to have a Magically moving house when people try to target it. In that house in what would be considered the basement, if the house could ever set itself down, sat the wizard Alex working on their newest spell. They didn't care much for fancy names that some of the paladins gave themselves or some of the lower level magies. They were just Alex. But it seemed to be the one thing people couldn't get right; not that they could even get the title right, they were a sorcerer not a wizard. They didn't need books to gain more power. They just needed enough imagination and the will to make it be. And that will hadn't failed them yet.
With a sharp inhale they focused all their energy into the cauldron their mother bought them when they where younger. Their mother being one of the strongest witches in their childhood was very insistent they used a vesil when using new magic. This one being the strongest made of the strongest material that could ever be enchanted; Shekadium.
And with the exhale came the lightning. I traveled through acrost it's beams until it reached the basement and exploded in every direction. It took a simple wave of Alex's hand to redirect the energy into the cauldron before using their vast powers to compress it down to just a small gem. "HA HA! I got it! Lightning in a gem! The look on those paladin's faces when I finally get to use this."
They tossed it into a bag with many many other gems of various colors and sizes and got back to work. Much work had to be finished for them to get done before the Temples monthly meeting tomorrow night. Almost all the paladins and clerics would be gathered at the temple for three days discussing their next tactics for the weeks to come.
Alex was planning on joining them for their first breakfast. Nothing they had was enough to trap Alex for long and they had closed down his favorite bread shop recently because of their "heroism work" and this would be their just reward for such a foolish act.
And it was as if Alex had blinked as their whole house shook and screamed like a demonic alarm to snap Alex out of their brain fog. Quickly inspecting their bags and bags of gems they ran upstairs to grab chawk and some ink and with the grace of a cat etched out a simple circle on the floor, threw their bag over their shoulder, and gently whispered "now take me to the Temple of Fairness." And with a flash they where gone.
Unlike Alex though, the past two nights and a day were not kind to Morgan. Having to keep a steady pace out of just panic and fear that could not leave them. Leading them to easily arrive at the crooked forest as the sun set the day after they left the capital. Their horse sadly quit moving forward after only getting three trees deep. This won't do. I can't just wait... Sighing in frustration Morgan took their bags half precariously strapping them to themselves. Loosening the horses reins till they slipped off and with a small tap it left. Well I guess it's just myself and I now.
Not wanting to rest just yet, Morgan kept walking, keeping a steady pace as to not tire oneself but brisk enough that they hoped could keep them safe if anything were to aproce. Counting out the moments with their own footsteps they almost made it through the night but right before the sun could have broken through there was a thud... And then another. It was so heavy it shook the earth enough that Morgan couldn't keep their footing and fell into the mud. Fuck! NO! Slowly apoching was a house, with thick wide legs that mimicked an octopus if it could walk upright on land. And right before it could step on Morgan it stopped. But before a breath of relief could be had the whole house shook violently with a deafening screech that would haunt their dreams before slamming onto the ground.
What was more shocking was only a few moments later before Morgan could recollect their fallen bags and sanity the house creaked throwing out a ladder of sorts and opening it's door. Well I do believe I'm losing my mind. I have to be dreaming... Owch. Maybe not a dream? It is inviting me in. I guess. Well this will be the most interesting way to go. Much better than at Chad's side. And with that affirmation they grabbed their things and climbed right into whatever type of trap this could be.
I am hoping to finish all the chapters for this before Sunday. Lot is going on in my life but I am trying
also if you notice this work on ao3 it is me. and dont worry i still have no idea what i am doing. just fun vibes. i did put this one down as mature because in the coming chapters it might and idk how to change things on this.
