I believe in you, I believe in us

“Hey Maggie. Could you watch the kids tonight?”

“Sure. Is everything alright?”

“Yeah. I just… Andrew has his boards tomorrow and…” She let the sentence fade. She wasn’t exactly sure herself what she wanted. Maybe she just liked to be there for him or something like that.

“Oh, you want to spend some time with your boyfriend?” Maggie teasingly raised an eyebrow, making Meredith reprimand her with one of her looks.

“He’s not my boyfriend.” She couldn’t hold back a small smile forming on her lips, taking the seriousness she tried to put into her words away. She probably wouldn’t believe that answer herself, and yet it was the truth.

After everything that had happened, Andrew and her were friends, and at the same time so much more than just friends, and yet not quite enough to call it a relationship again; yet. It was complicated. And at the same time so easy and comfortable to be around each other.

“Hey. You okay?” Meredith asked quietly after she stepped out of the elevator, slowly making her way over to Andrew who was leaning against the wall of the rooftop terrace.

“Hey.” He turned around at hearing her voice, seeming slightly surprised to see her there.

“A nurse told me your shift already ended, but your things were still there, so… I figured you might be up here…” She gave him a small smile as she slowly walked towards him.

“I tried to find a quiet moment to calm down a little… but it’s not working as I hoped.” He chuckled slightly; the tension visible in his behavior as he tried to smile back at her.

“Nervous?” Meredith stopped next to him, leaning against the wall as well, looking up at him and then following his gaze, observing the city in front of them; the lights sparkling in the night.

“It’s what I have worked for my whole life.” He took a deep breath “Yes, I- I’m nervous.” Andrew turned his head towards her for a moment. She could see how much he tried to let go of the nervous energy inside him, not succeeding. And she almost had to smile at his attempt, if she didn’t know how important this was for him.

“I know you will pass.” She kept his gaze, hoping to give him some reassurance by the confidence she had in him.

“It’s easy for you to say that. You are already an attending.” Even though there was still that part inside him, questioning whether he was ready to pass his boards, she could see the nervousness slowly fading off a little. And maybe that was all she hoped for tonight; to take some of that tension away from him.

She had seen him the past few weeks and month preparing for his boards; and after everything he had been through the past year, she knew which importance this had to him. But she didn’t only notice the effort he put into studying everything and anything, she could also see the nervousness rising in him. She could understand it, she would lie, if she said that she hadn’t been nervous when she was about to become an attending.

“I know. But tomorrow you will see that I was right.” She teased him a little, making him raise an eyebrow, while having a wider and wider smile on his face.

“Will I?”

She just smiled back at him, nodding slightly, her eyes shining in the moonlight as she fully turned towards him, both getting lost in their little bubble for a moment.
