During the Human/Monster war, the humans started to capture monsters and run experiments on them. Many believe that one of these monsters was the captain of the "Royal Guard"; the monster king's army. The only information we have on this subject is that she was a skeleton monster called "Arial" and that she was a "Boss Monster".

Somehow, scientists figured out how to extract raw magic out of boss monsters so they created artificial souls to contain this magic. They mixed human Determination into them but those experiments failed due to the creatures turning into melted amalgamations.

Soon, they discovered that Hate (a self-sustaining corruption that develops in souls and feeds off of Determination) could be used as a binding agent for these weapons and the scientists began work on figuring out the right balance between the ingredients.

After the humans won the war and sealed Monsters underneath Mt. Ebott, they continued work on the creation of these weapons. Eventually, they would succeed and the first "Magic User" was created. He looked like a human child with brown hair and bright red eyes. The scientists named him "R.O.M.A.N".

After some time, the scientists had created hundreds of them, all using Determination from different soul traits. The "Magic Users" were unstable, though remained docile around the captured monsters. Many believe this is due to them being made from the monsters' magic.

The scientists began running experiments on the children to see if they could reprogram their brains into hating monsters. The extent of the atrocities that humankind committed against these poor children is unknown but it is speculated that they rivalled that of the atrocities committed against monsters.

One day, however, everything changed. As an act of defiance, one of the "Magic Users", codenamed: "V.I.R.G.I.L" used it's magic to kill one of the scientists while it was being tested on. The humans, now desperate and afraid after most of their military force was lost during the war, took the "Magic Users" and captured monsters, locking them underneath a mountain that is located 20 miles to the East of Ebott City.

It is believed that the Magic Users managed to transform their prison into a thriving ecosystem. Some say that they set up multiple outposts (codenamed: "Ruins", "Snowdin", "Waterfall", "Hotland" and "City".) and established trade throughout using shiny yellow crystals as currency (codenamed: "G". It is unknown what this stands for.) Although, none of this can be confirmed.

Magic is fundamentally the same as in Undertale. But School of Magic adds something called "Secondary Magic" and "Unique Magic".
