Amelia West

February 14th - Freshman in College

It was Cameron's birthday yesterday and I didn't even call him.

This year has been amazing. New York is exactly what I needed. The big city. Not everyone knowing your every move. Not having to answer to anyone, but yourself. It's refreshing.

School is amazing, too. NYU is difficult, but it's perfect for me. I had a bit of trouble acclimating to the hard classes and all of the writing, but I've always wanted to be a journalist, so all the hours I am putting into it are helping.

In a perfect world, I would love to work for The New York Times. It may or may not happen, but a girl can dream.

I am currently sitting on a bench in Washington Square Park, finishing up a paper for my 'Intro to Journalism' class.

It's freezing outside, but the cold is helping me write faster. I also brought a blanket that is now covering my legs. Across from where I am sitting, there is a band of four men, looking like they are in their mid-60s, playing jazz. There are usually a lot more people hanging out, but it is pretty early in the day.

The one playing the bass just smiled at me. Next to the guitar case at his feet sits a heart-shaped chocolate box and flowers for a significant other.

It's Valentine's Day. February 14th.

Around me is a few couples strolling through the park.

Now that I realize it, I'm the only one here that's not with someone else celebrating the day. Usually, I would be at my parent's house and I would wake up to find Hershey kisses on my nightstand, my favorite candy, and my parents making breakfast.

"What's your plan after school today?" My dad would ask every morning.

And I would always respond with, "I'm hanging out with Cam."

I haven't seen Cameron since graduating. Our moms planned our graduation party together, but with both of our families and friends being there, we stuck to our agreement and avoided each other.

The agreement.

I have no clue what Cameron has been up to for the last 8 months, but I've been doing well. At first, I was sad that I wasn't able to tell him about the highs and lows of college, but I've met some great people here and life's been good. Friends drift apart and I have accepted that.

I feel the buzz of my phone on the bench.

Bell: Wanna do something today???

Me: Can't. Have plans.

Bell: Oh come on!! It's Valentine's Day :(((

Me: Family dinner ugh...

Me: With Cameron.

Bell: OMG! How could I forget! OMG!

Bell: GIRL!

Bell: You better keep me updated or I will kill you in your sleep!

Bell: jk jk but you better keep me in the loop!

Me: Don't worry, I will

Bell: Okay. Have fun!!

Me: xoxo

That reminds me, I have to start packing up. It takes a little more than two hours to get to Hartford. I finish out my paper and press send.

I've felt very confident in my papers and works lately, but I don't have a person to consult when I have a writing block...

I have met some great people though.
