cafe mami
"________"
The clinking of utensils on dishes and low chatter of other people in the cafe danced in the air as Mikoto and y/n stared at each other, both trying to inconspicuously get readings on the other.
"So..." Mikoto started, absentmindedly swirling her parfait with her small spoon and eyeing y/n.
"So..." y/n added, maintaining eye contact while slowly bringing her forkful of cake to her glossy lips.
"You're a psychic, too?" they both said in unison.
A silence hung in the air for a few seconds.
"Mannnn, if you don't-"
The two began to cackle at themselves again.
"Oh my god" Mikoto tried to get out, but couldn't with how hard she was laughing.
"Girl, this ain't Law and Order," y/n wheezed "Why are we acting so serious? lmaooo"
Some of the other customers looked at the teenagers, either in jealousy or annoyance of their loud laughter. Mikoto noticed this.
"Aye, we're over here minding our own business, y'all should do the same. I swear, black people are never alone because there's always somebody's nose in our business."
"PFFFFFTTT mikoto please-"
"What? I'm right. Let me tell you, growing up half black in Japan, there's always old people staring me down. Like, I know I'm hot but damn, can I have my face back?"
"I'm glad you get it-- I literally said the EXACT same thing this morning because everyone in my class was staring a hole into my face like they ain't ever seen a black person before."
"Honestly, I think it's mostly because ur hot- like your whole vibe is just cool."
"Really? What do you mean?" y/n questioned, leaning forward to sip her shake.
"Hmm..." Mikoto pulled her spoon out of her mouth. "Well, your aura is like a a gentle blend of pink, orange, and purple, so I can tell that you're pretty easy going and always willing to help others, but the purple also tells me that you're intelligent and more on the reserved side." She took a small sip of her iced tea. "Am I right?"
'Honeslty, pretty accurate. I'm pretty much the hot girl that never talks in class'
"Wow, you're good. Is that your ability, you can read auras?"
"Yeah! I can also predict the future, but I usually use my crystal ball to do that. What about you? I predicted that another psychic would be transferring to PK Academy this week, which turned out to be you, but I couldn't figure out what your ability is."
"Well..." y/n began. "I'm a clairvoyant. My main skill is palmistry, but I have a few other abilities that I don't really know what to call. I can also predict the future in my dreams, but I can't pick and choose what I want to predict. Most of my predictions are pretty benign though."
"So basically, you specialize in like, reading people? That's so cool! How do you read me? Do you need my hands?"
"Nah, I can tell a lot about people's past and personality based on their like, face and body structure, too. Based on your lips and cheekbones, I see... earth energy? So I can tell that you're very sociable, confident, and reliable, but you can come off as flamboyant to some." Mikoto snorted."Now let me see your hands?"
Mikoto placed her hands on the table, and y/n placed them into hers. Tracing the lines and humming to herself, more and more details about the gyaru came to the surface.
"Ok... you were born sometime in September in Nerima, Tokyo and you have an older sister who's in college. You look up to her a lot.
"In terms of your future, I see..." she focused on a line under mikoto's middle finger. "a sugar daddy by 25, no, 24, and a modeling gig sometime before we graduate. Nice."
"OH THANK GOD!" Mikoto released a breath she didn't realize she was holding in. "I'm so glad to finally have someone be able to read my future, thanks y/n!" She squealed, hugging y/n.
"No problem! How about your past and personality stuff? Was I right?"
"Oh, totes! Dang, that's such a cool ability to have, I'm kinda jealous!"
"Don't be- it's not like I can use my abilities on myself. I can't even "turn off" my abilities either, so it gets overwhelming with knowing all this stuff about people just by looking at them. That's why I usually keep to myself."
"Ahhh, I get what you mean. There's some setbacks to my powers, too, but I still think yours are re~ally cool. Omg we should start a fortune telling business someday, we'd definitely get rich from it!"
"That's a great idea! Maybe not anytime soon though, I have to get used to the workload at PK first.
"Can you believe my teacher assigned" y/n began as she pulled 2 textbooks and 3 folders out of her bag. "THIS much work on my first day here? Watch me drop out by next week."
"Wh- drop out? Bruh you just got here! Girl stop playing."
"Naurrr, I'm not playing! I'm not cut out for this life mane ヽ(;▽;)ノ"
"Please, you'll be fine. Why don't you just ask your teacher for an extension?
"Because if I have more time to do it, I know I won't do it ( '́⌣'̀) But don't worry, I'll figure it out somehow."
y/n turned to her right, looking out the window to distract herself while Mikoto was scooping out the last pieces of fruit from the bottom of her glass.
Unlike before, a comfortable silence fell upon the girls.
"Come on, let's head home before the trains get too crowded." said Mikoto, standing up from their table and checking her phone, noticing she had a gotten a text from another teen psychic.
"Ooh, good idea." y/n took her final sip of her milkshake. "Ok, let's go!"
