[If you want context for some things- Read "Fablehaven" and "Dragonwatch" by: Brandon Mull]
Kendra took a small bite of the vanilla cream cake the brownies had made earlier that morning for her grandparents and everyone else. She had saved hers for later so she could eat it after dinner. And luckily, no one had eaten it before she had a chance to get to it first.Proudly the age of eighteen, Kendra was now accepted as an adult among her family, and she gets included in more adult conversations. Granted, most of them weren't that interesting, but she found a few things to take out of each talk her grandparents and parents had.
Her younger brother, Seth, was now sixteen. He was officially old enough to drive, but their parents and grandparents had told him that learning to drive would not be a need. Even though Seth shrugged it off, Kendra knew better than to believe he wasn't bothered by not having the experience of driving.
Kendra sat up from her seat, took her now empty plate to the sink, and then started toward the stairs. Come to think it, she hadn't really seen Seth all day, and wondered if he was alright. Climbing up the staircase to the attic room, she stopped at the closed door. She knocked lightly with her knuckle.
"Seth," Kendra said. "You in there?" She checked the knob to see if it was locked, when it wasn't, she opened the door, to see a lump laying under the blankets of her brother's bed.
A faint memory flashed in her mind of when Seth had snuck out and shoved a pillow under his covers. Had Seth snuck out again? Didn't he say he was going to stay away from trouble from now on?
Kendra walked over to Seth's bed and she yanked the covers off. But to her surprise and her relief, there was Seth, laying in fetal position in his bed. Eyes closed, but not for long.
Seth stretchered out his legs and arms, groaning sleepily. He opened his eyes and looked lazily up at Kendra. "What?" He said groggily.
Kendra cleared her throat. She hadn't actually expect him to be there. The old Seth she knew would not be laying in bed right now. Especially before he was forced to go to bed. But that was the old Seth. Kendra kept having to remind herself that her younger brother had changed drastically since the dragon war had both begun and ended.
Lately, instead of looking for the next battle that might come, Seth kept away from anything that could possible make life worse. He looked tired all the time. He didn't eat like a famished wolf like he used to. And he never caused any mischief. Not that she missed when he did cause trouble, but it just seemed un-Seth-like.
"Sorry," She said. "I thought that you might have snuck out again." She dropped the blanket at her brother's side.
Seth rubbed his eyes. "I don't think I'm going to be sneaking out anytime soon," He said.
"Yeah, I know," Kendra said. "I just, I don't know, had a moment."
Seth blinked. "A moment?"
"I just had a little flashback from when you snuck out," Kendra said. She at down near Seth's feet.
He stared at her. "Anything else?" he asked.
"Have you left your room at all today?" She asked him.
"I don't know," He said. "What time is it?"
Kendra pulled up her sleeve to reveal a small watch. "It's 7:15pm, Seth."
Seth shot up into a sitting position. "Wait, what?"
"Yeah; have you even gotten out of bed today?" She asked. "I know I haven't seen you until now."
