iii. train to busan
min-jun is a master manifestorTHE SCREAMS start. Ma-ri jumps to her feet, pushing Gwinam in the other direction while grabbing a tray. "Run, loser," she hisses.
She races to her brother, smacking the tray against a student straddling and snarling at him. "We have to get Min-jun." Her voice carries over the havoc as she grabs his hand, and he nods. She spots the said boy, standing still in the middle of the chaos next to his friends.
Ma-ri snatches his arm, tugging him away and
shouting at the group. "Get to safety!"The adrenaline throw all thoughts of common sense out of her mind, and all she can think of is to keep her brothers safe. Whatever is going on, why people are biting and eating each other like some kind of zombie, it doesn't matter—she needs to make sure they're safe before anything.
Jun-min quickly recovers, punching and kicking any student trying to get too close. Chaos overtakes the lunchroom, students that were laughing and joking around moments ago now turned deadly.
"Min, I'll kill you when we get out of here," Ma-ri shouts at her twin brother, her clammy hands tightening the grip on both of them.
"What the fuck did I do?" he yells back, kicking a nearing student in the crotch. He visibly shudders.
"I heard you try to shift to Train to Busan last night."
"I didn't know it would fucking work!"
"Are you seriously arguing in the middle of a zombie apocalypse?" Jun-min says in disbelief, dodging two zombies.
Ma-ri leads them to the back door of the kitchen, pushing them out along with other students. When no one else is left, she tries to follow but someone snatches her arm and pulls her back. Slamming the door shut, she flips the person, the thing, and tosses it to the floor, throwing the first thing she sees off the counter.
A juice packet hits it dead centre on the forehead.
Her back presses against the door, preventing anyone from trying to get in while trying to kick away the person. She knows her brothers wouldn't just leave her, but sometimes those idiots have to prioritise their own safety.
Desperately looking around, Ma-ri prays to all the gods and deities for something to protect herself with, anything. And they respond, because she spots a bat leaning against the wall furthest away from her.
The slamming of the door stops and she breathes out, staring at the growling person in her way to the weapon.
It snarls. She snarls back and jumps at it, punching it while trying to avoid getting eaten.
She lunges for the bat, but another one jumps out and she flings a high kick, shattering its teeth, her new white shoe getting splattered with red.
Once, she reaches the bat, she grabs the handle and slams it against every head she sees. "Fuck you!" But the more she hits, the more they seem to swarm her.
"Ma—"
"Fuck you," she repeats and throws the bat into the person's head.
Gwinam ducks last minute and backs away. Ma-ri widens her eyes and stops, but then she sees a zombie charge at him from behind.
"Duck!" she screams and swings. The zombie flies, slumping against the floor as blood speckles her uniform.
"You crazy bitch, you're not the fucking Joker!" She pushes him under a table, too busy trying to not get bitten to care about his snarky remark.
More and more zombies try to get in. Ma-ri knows she can't stay in there forever—after all, every-time she hits them they would just come back multiplied. At one point she'll be overwhelmed.
Someone snatches her ankle. She raises her bat but freezes when she sees it's just Gwinam trying to pull her under. She quickly scrambles next to him, trying to keep distance but also out of the zombies radar. The space is so crammed that her knees touch his chest.
Ma-ri notices another student under there, but before she can do or say anything, Gwinam pushes him out with a kick.
"No!" She reaches for him, but the mullet boy snatches her hair as a zombie already pounces at him. She slumps back, hand against her mouth and looking anywhere but at Gwinam.
Her heartbeat picks up. He pushed the boy out so easily; what's stopping him from using her as a human shield? It isn't like they are on good-terms, maybe he even pulled her under so he can use her as a shield.
A much as Ma-ri hates him, she isn't one to throw someone to their death. But Gwinam, he is.
"We can't stay here," she breathes, backing away from the boy. "We have to leave. Maybe find an empty classroom."
"No way a zombie would fucking eat that empty brain—"
"I have to go to my brothers."
"Fuck your brothers."
Ma-ri clutches the bat tightly and shakes her head. Gwinam cursing at her doesn't surprise her, and neither does his forceful kicks that send her back until her body exposed to nearby zombies.
Her thigh aches but she simply glares at him, swinging the bat against a zombie's head. "What's the point in saving me if you're going to kick me out?!"
She backs away to the door. A familiar girl snarls at her and Ma-ri strikes her, hearing a disgusting crunch before she drops to the floor. She stares at the body for a few seconds.
Holy shit, I just killed Min-jun's ex.
"There are knives on the counter," she calls back to Gwinam, her hand on the door handle. "I think their weakness is the neck."
"He doesn't deserve me," she murmurs, slipping out the door.
