"Come on let's go." Richie boasted, getting a good grip on his handlebars and hoisting himself onto his bike.
"Are we going to your house?" Eddie raised his eyebrows.
"Why not? It's only 4 we have time, plus no ones home and if you don't wanna come over Eds, I'm sure your mom would love to." Richie winked
"Shut the fuck up Richie." Eddie smacked the smirking boy.
"I bet I could beat you there."
"No fucking way." Eddie giggled
"You wanna bet on it?" Richie smiled, with the certain tenderness in his voice he only had with Eddie.
"Really Richie?" Eddie scoffed, rolling his eyes "Gambling? That's so immature."
"So you don't think you can beat me?" Richie smirked, adjusting his chunky glasses.
"What? N-no." Eddie stuttered and looked out at the rest of the losers pedaling off slowly getting smaller and smaller, it was just him and Richie left at the quarry, something about that made Eddie feel funny. "Ten bucks." Eddie blurted out with a sudden surge of confidence. "I bet you ten bucks I'll beat you."
"Really?" Richie smiled "You're on!" He started peddling aggressively
"Hey!! That's not fair! I'm not ready!"
"Oh boohoo Eds!" Richie laughed, his voice slowly fading.
"Don't call me that dumbass." Eddie yelled as he started to feverishly pedal his bike, getting closer to Richie and eventually passing him. Eddie let out a triumphant "hah" before Richie glided past him.
Everything was in slow motion in that moment and Eddie was suddenly mesmerized. Richie turned his head with a cocky smile on his face and flashed a middle finger at the other boy. Eddie giggled and rolled his eyes. He watched as Richie's dumb hawiian shirt flowed behind him and his dumb mouth splurged out inappropriate comments about Eddies mom, but Eddie didn't mind. He was too focused on the way Richie looked over at him with a smile and the way he stood up to get more leverage. Eddie was too damn lovestruck to realize the giant crack in the road that sent him hurling towards the pavement.
Suddenly the slow motion montage came to a halt and Eddie's vision got blurry. Richie heard the crash and quickly abandoned his bike. He ran towards Eddie who laid helplessly ruffling through his pockets for his inhaler.
"Holy fuck Eddie." Richie exclaimed, genuine panic in his eyes. "Are you okay?" Eddie simply whimpered in response as he finally pulled his inhaler from his shorts pocket. Richie grabbed Eddie and carefully propped him up on the curb nearby, looking over his frail body.
He had bruises slowly forming on his arms and a giant scrape on his cheek that bled slightly. Richie looked into his eyes that welled with tears and as a drop rolled from his eye Richie quickly wiped it away.
"Hey it's gonna be okay, I'm here." Richie comforted embracing Eddie in his arms "Let's go, come on."
Eddie sniffled as Richie grabbed both his hands and helped him stand. They left their bikes and walked together. Richie's arm around Eddie's shoulders as if to help his walk, although Eddie didn't hurt his legs at all and was perfectly capable of walking on his own. Richie knew this, still he needed to have a hold on him.
This was a strange occurrence. It was usually Richie getting hurt and Eddie taking care of him because Richie was a reckless little fuck, but this was different.
"How the fuck did you even fall?" Richie laughed slightly
"I guess I never noticed that crack before." Eddie smiled nervously. He was lying. He was also extra cautious when riding his bike, making sure he wouldn't hit any bumps. Of course Richie knew this.
