Chapter 7

"Hey May? This was delivered by your name this morning."

The friendly cook is handing May an envelope with a familiar looking logo on it. It's from a record label she recognizes. One of their executives visited the Café a while ago but did not seem interested in her style of singing. But maybe someone liked the CD she gave him.

"Oh God! Please tell me this is something good?"

"OPEN IT" says the cook, clearly as excited as May, if not more.

She opens the envelope and proceeds to read the letter inside. It states all the details of a possible internship she is been shortlisted for.

They celebrate over glasses of water and she packs the papers neatly into her purse before getting started with her shift.

"The internship requires me to be there full time for 3 months. How can I afford any of that? I don't wanna loose my crappy job. I actually love the Café."

May is frantic after coming back from her final audition. Her selection is not even the biggest shock she got today and she has no idea how she can manage all of it. So she calls over her boyfriend.

Yes, she has a boyfriend now. The man she met at the bar on a blind date event turned out to be an amazing guy. He works in the movie industry, something about marketing and distribution but she has no idea how any of that works so she zones out everytime he tries to explain it to her.

But he is amazing. He actually cares for her. The first time they met was the first time they had sex and she had shut the door on his face without knowing that he really wanted to take her out again, on a real date. Thankfully for May, the man did not give up and kept pursuing her until she said Yes.

"We will figure something out. You can stay over at my place of you like. I know this apartment is kind of expensive and you really shouldn't have to pay for not even living here."

"But I..." May tries to protest but the polite man uncharacteristically interruptions her and says "You'll be home barely 2 days a week. I can manage that. And I'll get you a better place when you are back at work."

He keeps explaining things and May is happy someone finally has her back for once.

"What if you get bored of me and kick me out of your apartment?" May asks.

Her boyfriend chuckles and says "I'll never get bored of you. Plus it's a big house. You can always hide in one of the rooms without me knowing much about it. Or at least I can choose the ignore a cute brunette hiding behind the curtains from time to time.".

She leaps into her arms and places a kiss on his started lips which soon curl into a smile. They spend the next weekend moving her bulky belongings into his place and her daily needs into the studio alloted shared housing.

Her internship feels like a dream sometimes. May spends her weekdays learning the tricks of the trade from iconic industry giants, from some of her idols.

Her weekends are usually spent with the surprisingly affectionate boyfriend or her work friends from the Café. Of course the Café owner hates serving coffee to her everytime she visits. She always makes sure to match the day and time of her visit to when the owner drops by to "mingle" with the staff and "show them how things are done the right way".

Every Friday night is spent on the phone with her boyfriend falling asleep while reassuring her that they are going to meet the next morning. Some days he isn't home when she gets there but she has the keys to his place and makes herself at home until he gets back.

"I miss you" she says while refusing to hang up the call.

"You'll be here tomorrow. Now can I please sleep? I have a really annoying client who refuses to work on the commercial movies that keep falling into his lap."

"Who is it? Do I know him?"

"Firstly, I'm not telling you anything about him and secondly, yes you definitely know him. Everyone knows him for f*ck sake. No wonder he gets so many offers."

"Fine. Go to sleep. I'll see you tomorrow. I lov..." she stops before she can spill out the L word and the Y word together and stress him out but to her surprise he responds "I love you too. Good night.".

The weekend goes by quickly between kisses and kitchen adventures of them trying to cook random dishes. They get to know more about each other's past, some of which comes as a surprise to both of them.

"You really kissed a girl when you were in college, really? Not just funny game bet kiss but actual kiss?"

"YUP!" says May "And mine is way less shocking than yours. How does it ever work?"

"Why is it such a big deal? I like guys and I like girls and I happen to like you right now."

"Right now?" asks May and he replies "Yes! Right now. That's good enough for now. I don't wanna freak you out.".

Their steamy moments are amazing as always but the more time they spend together the less they rely on physical intimacy. Sunday morning goes by with them reading books with their feet tangled into each other, heads resting on the backboard of his bed and hands absent-mindedly stroking each other from time to time.

This is it, she thinks. This is the relationship she has always been looking for. And what better timing than her career being on the right path as well. She finds herself knocking on wood with that thought from time to time.

The next morning she is back at the company accommodation before heading to the studio. Another week and her internship will be done. Three interns will be selected for mainstream project the following month.
