I felt my back against the wall as I sat down on the cold elevator floor with my champagne bottle placed beside me.

The poor elevator music made the only sound to fill the awkward silence with that was starting to build up again.

I looked at my left and watched him do the same. With my eyes straight ahead of me, I focused on the sound of his jacket dragging across the rough wall. By the look of his choice of outfit, he was heading somewhere fancy. I let the thought linger in my mind as I looked down at my dress, took off my thin jacket and let my head fall back onto the wall.

“So, I suppose you were headed somewhere”

His voice caught me off guard. I turned my head, meeting his eyes as I let out a chuckle.

“Yeah, how’d you know” I said with a smile as I threw my hands out, indicating my dress.

“Im sorry, just wanted to break the ice”, he said as a smile grew on his face. I let out a breath. “So I suppose you were too?”, I said directing my attention to his black bowtie.

“Yeah how’d you know?”, he said mimicking me. He stood up and made a quick swirl, dramatically struck a pose before sliding down the wall, now closer to me. I giggled, much to his enjoyment.

How come I’ve never seen him before? I mean sure, just because he came from my hall it doesn’t mean he lives here. But still.

“Do you live here?” I blurt out. “Yes I do, fair lady”, he jokingly said. I smiled.

“How come I’ve never seen you around then?”

“I just moved in, a few days ago actually”

“Ah, well that explains the moving trucks”

He chuckled, “Yeah, I have a lot of shit”

Sounds from outside found its way into the small space of where we sat. The ball was about to drop soon, people were ecstatic. A new year meant new possibilities, moments for new memories to be created. It saddened me, how much I wanted to be apart of that.

I fiddled with the cap of the champagne bottle. “What are you doing?”, he asked, watching me. “Well, it looks like we’re going to be stuck here for awhile so”, I said calmly as I sighed. I turned my head to meet his eyes and sheepishly looked down at the bottle again. My cheeks were heating up again. “Help?”, I murmured, handing him the bottle.

“Do you have anything sharp?”  He stood up, and I followed his actions.

I dug into my jacket pocket, fishing up a black bobby pin and handing it to him. With a pop, the cap hit the wall ahead of it leaving him with an open bottle. The champagne poured out, covering the floor. He politely handed me the bottle. “Ladies first”, he said with a grin.

I grabbed the bottle and brought it up to my lips, letting the alcohol slid down my throat. Satisfied, I held it out to him. He had watched me with a cheeky smile with his hands inside his pockets. His shirt fit perfectly to his muscles, showing them off in a perfect way. I broke my eyes away from him and handed him the bottle.

“Were you checking me out?”, his question startled me. I felt my face heat up, as I pressed my back against the wall turning my eyes to the wet floor.  “No I wasn’t, just drink the thing”, I embarrassedly let out. He laughed before bringing the bottle against his lips. Taking big gulps of the champagne, he closed his eyes and let his head fall back.

A sweet, classy tune came out of the elevator speakers. I recognised the song immediately, being one of my favorites. Frank Sinatra's “Strangers In The Night” was playing. With the alcohol taking its effect on me, I started to hum the lyrics of the song, slowly wagging my head to the rhythm.

He set the bottle down and took a deep breath. Taking a step closer to me, he locked his dark eyes with mine. Reaching his hand out, he jokingly put his other hand behind his back.

“Dance with me”
