Novah Lewis
When I saw him, my heart stopped.
I'd never been one to believe in "love at first sight." There was just something about him that drew me in.
Before college, I'd had my whole life planned out, down to every fine detail. I never had a doubt in my mind that I would make sure everything played out the way I wanted it to. I'd graduated top of my class from Ridgewood High, a high end private school I'd studied my ass off to get accepted into. On top of my straight A's, I played volleyball, soccer, dance and was an equestrian, was president of my class and in the national honor society. I was the picture perfect student.
Being involved in a lot of clubs and sports meant that I had a lot of friends. And my involvement, kind, bubbly personality and my looks easily made me popular. I enjoyed it most of the time, though I wasn't one for parties. Honestly, the parties thrown by my school weren't all that interesting, anyways.
I had a boyfriend, Eren Jaeger. He was sweet to me, very defensive, the typical high school jock. We had different friend groups, so we didn't hang out often but we liked each other enough to stay together after high school and ended up at the same college, along with the majority of his friend group.
College was a change. The atmosphere, the people and the expectations were all different. I'm not sure what I was expecting, and I wasn't all that disappointed, but it just wasn't matching what I'd pictured.
Especially him."You know we eventually have to leave, right love?" My mom says as she looks up from her phone.
I sigh, running a hand through my hair. "Yeah, I know. It's weird though." I glance out the large window on one side of my new dorm room. "The thought of living without you guys, I mean."
"Oh, honey, you'll have Eren here, so it'll be like you never left home. You two were always together, anyways!" My dad says, chuckling. I just roll my eyes at him.
"Okay, maybe it is time for you guys to head out!" I say getting up and heading towards the door.
The three of us exitted the dorm house and stood on the sidewalk, saying goodbye when Eren and his parents walked out behind us. When they spotted us, they walked over, joining our little group.
"Hey, Novah," Eren says, smiling at me, his aqua eyes sparkling in the sun.
I smile back, brushing my hair back from my face again. God, why didn't I just put it up? My hair was wavy and long, reaching the middle of my back. It was always getting in my way. It was a mix of both my mom and dad's hair, brown undertones and blonde on the top, naturally.
"Hey, Eren. Grisha, Carla, hi!" I say, turning away from my parents to Eren's.
Carla smiled at me and reached forward to hug me. I returned the gesture, wrapping my arms around her shoulders. I always liked Carla, she was always so kind and fair. We enjoyed picking on Eren together whenever we could.
When we parted, Carla turned to greet my mother and I smiled at Grisha. Returning the gesture, he puts his hand on my shoulder for a moment, before retreating back to his position beside his wife.
Eventually both Eren and my parents left us standing on the sidewalk, waving goodbye as the cars rolled away. When they were out of sight, I glanced at Eren, who looked back at me. I gave him a tight lipped smile that I know didn't reach my eyes, unsure of what to do with myself. It almost didn't feel real, the fact that we were in college, now living mainly without our families.
"Hey, come here," Eren tells me, opening his arms to me. I wrap my arms around his torso, resting my cheek on his chest as his arms go around my shoulders, chin resting on my head. "This is gonna be good. And the plus is we're still together, right? There's nothing to worry about!" he said, rubbing my back.
I let out a sigh and lean back to look at his face. Eren always looked so determined, so sure that everything was going to work out and I envied that. Usually, I was a very positive person, but I had my moments of self-doubt.
"I know, you're right," I reply. "It's just weird, the thought of being so far from home, you know?"
Hearing this, Eren leans down and pecks my lips in a comforting gesture. I smile up at him, again, trying to figure out how he felt so calm about this major change. That was one of the things I liked about him, he was always so steady, so sure.
"Let's go inside, we can watch a movie in my room?" Eren says, taking my hand.
"Won't your roommate be moving in soon?" I ask as we start walking, causing him to chuckle.
"My roommate is Armin, Noh. he's been moved in since seven this morning. He and Mikasa are exploring the campus together." He tells me as we walk through the glass doors of our dorm hall.
Eren wraps his arm around my shoulders as we walk and I gently lean into him. "Yeah, okay then."
