"We believe in ordinary acts of bravery in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another."
~ Divergent ~
Today I'm Dauntless. Brave, courageous, and free. I walked through the school with my head held high. I felt unstoppable.
I attended care group and imagined myself jumping out of the window, flipping, then rolling to my feet. All my classmates starring through the open window. I give them a smug look and a single wave, then I-
"Elara, El-o-r-a?" My care group interrupts my daydream and I reluctantly answer.
"It's Elora, sir," he nodded his head and continued to call the role. I pulled out my book and began reading. The boy on the desk over peeked over at what I was doing.
"Nerd," he whispered. I looked up from my book and raised my eyebrows.
"You should be nice to nerds, one day you'll end up working for one," I said plainly. At least I wish I had said that. I have a tendency to think of cool things to say and then not say them, annoying, right?
"She can't help it if she can read and you can't," It was Rachel's voice, I looked behind me to see Rachel standing there with her hands on her hips.
"I can read. Reading for fun is for freaks," He spat the last word out like it was venom.
"Well, keep bothering the freaks like this and you might regret it," she crossed her hands over her chest and I looked back at the boy to see what he would do. He scoffed in reply.
"No seriously, what do you think she's reading about. Pixies, fairies and rainbows? She's reading about murderers, assassins, thousand-year warriors and people who could snap you like a twig and if she's such a nerd, what do you think she's learning? So go back to your pointless conversations," she pulled a book out of her bag. "I am going to learn how to overthrow the Government or was it burning people at the stake, it might be that actually. Sometimes I forget." Her voice deepened and she stared him right in the eye. "So, turn around and thank your lucky soul that you don't live in the 1500's where I could accuse you of being a vampire." She stared him down until he turned around and continued conversation with his friends.
"Thanks," I whispered. She flicked her hand and sat down. Rachel wasn't a confident person, she was only like that when it was me being teased.
"What do we have first?"
"Um, English, we start our stories today," she has her hair pulled back into a ponytail and she knotted her hands together. "I have no idea what I'm going to write about."
"I can help you with that," I literally have a million ideas. "The topic is distance, so, you could write about space, a pirate on land longing to see the ocean, two lovers who have been separated, two brothers who slowly loose each other," she raised her head.
"I like the last one, can I use that?"
"Sure," Rachel liked sad stories, dystopian and adventure. Made sense she would pick that one.
I was going to write about a pirate longing to see the sea, but I couldn't come up with a starting sentence. So, I decided to scrap the idea. Instead, I'm going to write the reverse of a lover story where they go from lovers to strangers, their love 'distancing'.
Our English teacher is stupid. We are in year ten and yet we are still subjected to a seating plan. He even has a seating plan for his caregroup.
I look for my seat and its right at the back of the class.
Brilliant, I can sit and read without being seen.
People fill into the room and I bring my book out of my bag and I get sucked into adventurous lives of my characters.
