For three whole years Payton Roe has endured life at the Epsilon Shelter with her monsterous father. They survived the fatal snowstorm that buried half of the world's population including Payton's mother and older brother Roddy under miles of frozen snow, forcing Payton to live in the survivors' shelter. Even though she survived, Payton doesn't feel like she's really living, not while that creature is around.
She makes a break for her freedom, fully aware of how dangerous the frozen world has become outside of the Shelter walls, and is captured by a boy who is surely no more capable of human emotion than her father; a dark, bitter and brutally strong boy who is surely going to kill her.
Yet, there is something behind the black eyes that Payton knows is longing to be found...
