[angst] alone in their own little space

"Come sit with me," New pats the soft cushion beside him, motioning Tay to sit down next to him.

Tay has just got home. Actually, he just got home after not checking in with New for two weeks. Tay had expected that when he opened the door, New would come at him, yelling and throwing everything he could reach at him. But when he got home, New was sitting on the couch waiting for him, just like he did every night when he got home from work. The only difference was that there were no hugs and kisses to greet him.

Tay sits down slowly beside New, who does his best not to look tense. His pale complexion glows even in the sparse light of the living room. New took a deep breath and released a faint sigh.

"Are you tired?" New's eyes were everywhere but Tay's.

"I'm tired, I want to sleep..."

"No. Are you tired? Of me? Of us?"

Tay could hear the crack in New's voice. The silence was deafening and Tay didn't know what to say. He loves New, he's sure of it. But is he happy too?

"Do you love me?" New asks again, the pain clear in his voice, but he still refuses to look at Tay.

"I love you" Now Tay isn't sure what he's saying. Those three words lacked feeling, tasted bitter on his tongue.

New finally lifted his head and looked into Tay's eyes, which were full of pain and regret. His view made his heart ache.

"You know, Tay. The pain is a lot more bearable if you just told me you don't want this anymore." His own words cut into his heart as he remembered the revelation he'd discovered. "Did you have fun with her? Are you happy with her?"

But Tay could not utter a word. His heart aches too, but he knows they will end up here eventually.

"I love you, Tay. More than yesterday, not enough than tomorrow."

Those were the last words he heard before New left, leaving him and the memories they'd made in what they called their own little space.
