Chapter V: Demons

Dodrescu paced back and forth across the width of the great hall as Daciana and Ilinca looked on. He was still furious, and the Sirens had to tread carefully. One wrong move, and his vicious temper could be turned on them.

"You were right to throw her out," Daciana finally ventured to say. "She was a ridiculous creature. Completely unsuitable."

"You should have killed her," Ilinca suggested innocently.

The Count slowed his pacing. He did not look up as he said, "I threw her out so that I would not kill her."

Daciana was taken aback by this. "But why?" she asked. "You cannot possibly be still thinking of using her! She was dreadful. Mirela would never accept her!"

"Mirela will have no choice!" shouted Dodrescu. "There is no other. You know this! This girl, she is young, and has looks that are – acceptable."

"You have no idea what she looks like!" said Daciana. "She could look like anything under all those absurd clothes." Daciana thought about how to further support her argument and added, "Ilinca thinks she may have fat thighs."

Ilinca giggled at this and said, "I don't really think that."

"I tell you it doesn't matter!" Dodrescu yelled. Then calmly, he continued. "We must invite her back for tomorrow night. Except this time we must be prepared. She must be prepared. Nothing must be left to chance. I will visit her tonight in her bedchamber, and ensure her cooperation."

Ilinca laughed, as if she just had an amusing thought. "What if she's wearing men's pyjamas? Then you just might accidentally kill her!"

Enraged, Dodrescu pulled back his hand to slap the Harpy, but then thought better of it. "You are right," he conceded reluctantly. "I cannot allow myself to have any further hateful thoughts toward this girl, if she is to be the vessel for my beloved Mirela." Dodrescu turned, and looked at the two Sirens. "The two of you will go first, to prepare her. Make sure she is dressed appropriately. Ensure she is suitably compliant. You know what needs to be done!"

Daciana knew when the time for arguing had passed. "Yes, Master," she said with a short bow. Ilinca took her cue from Daciana, and said "Yes, Master," as well. The two sisters walked out to the courtyard, spread their wings, and leapt into the sky.

"And," said Dodrescu, stopping them momentarily from the doorway, "check out her thighs."

Dodrescu returned to the castle while the sisters flew into the night.
