You had to admit it eventually. You were a very average person. Average looks, average intelligence, average personality, everything about you was... Very typical. Which is precisely why you thought Saiki hung out with you. You never minded his company. In fact, he was a splash of excitement to your usually boring life, as strange as that is. He wasn't a very colorful person, personality wise, but his odd powers and supernatural abilities were always interesting to you.
It was an autumn afternoon when you and Saiki were hanging out in his room. The window was open, and you could hear the wind blowing the golden leaves down from the trees. You were lying down on his bed, eyes closed haphazardly as you listened to him type away on his laptop, trying to finish a project on time. He always turned in projects on the day they were due, and always completed worksheets by the end of class to seem inconspicuous. He's told you about this phenomenon before, as his plan to completely blend in with society and remain as insignificant as possible.
He never directly said this, but you were sure that he only hung out with you because of your averageness. Even bringing it up to him, he denies it. You didn't mind... That much. Well, that's stretching the truth a little far. The thing was, you did mind, quite a bit actually. You just rolled with it most of the time. Because... You happened to have a crush on Saiki, but he trusted you enough to let you know that he wasn't comfortable with dating at all. So, you happily take a backseat from chasing his affection most of the time, because you care for him and his comfort. He seemed to appreciate this, since most of his other friends can't take a hint and leave him alone.
You open your eyes as you hear him grunt softly and watch him lean back in his chair, stretching.
"Almost finished?" You ask. He looks over at you and nods, starting to type away at his computer again. "Y'know, you should take a break. You've been working hard for a while now."
He pauses, before sighing and shutting his laptop. He faces you in his chair. You hear him speak in your mind.
"What do you wanna do then?" He asks. You shrug.
"We could... Go to the park?" You suggest. He scrunches his nose at the idea.
"Too many bugs." He states.
"Then... Let's just stay here and chill and... Talk?" You suggest. He shrugs, sitting back in his chair, crossing his arms.
"About what, exactly?" He asks. You take a deep breath, and let it out.
"I dunno. Life? School?"
"I thought we were taking a break from school?" He says. You groan.
"I don't know, let's just talk about something not boring then!" In reality, you had already decided what you wanted to talk about, but you'd never tell Saiki. However, he seemed to already figure it out.
"You wanna talk about that then?" He says. You feel your face heat up, and you sit up to look at him. You giggle nervously.
"W-What?" You ask. He looks at you, in a way that comes across as "You know exactly what."
"You still have feelings for me." He says nonchalantly. You turn red, eyes going wide. You cross your arms, unknowingly mimicking his actions.
"Yeah... S-So what..?" You ask, avoiding his gaze. He lets a small smile escape.
"I have grown at least a little attached to you, you know." He says. You look at him incredulously, your heart seeming to leap out of your chest. "I only tell you this because I know you won't talk about it with anyone else but me. But yes, I would be lying if I said I didn't have a sort of... fondness for you as well. I'm unsure if it's love or just me being around you too much, but I think it could be something."
Before your instincts take over, you have to stop yourself from being impulsive.
"Well... Whatever you feel, take your time with it. I'm not forcing you to make a decision about us, I want you to be sure because... I want you to be happy as well." You say, smiling at him. He seems taken aback a bit, but then he smiles.
"I appreciate it." He says. You nod. He turns to look at his laptop, and then back at you briefly. "Well, I suppose I should keep working... Afterwards, we can watch a movie if you'd like?"
"Sounds good." You say. He nods, opening his laptop. He sets his fingers on the keys, but hesitates. He looks back at you.
"You're not as average as you may think, you know." You lock eyes with him, surprised.
"How's that..?" You ask.
"You're more extraordinary than me. You feel more and express yourself far better than I ever could with my telepathy. Sure, you may look and act the part of the average girl, but you are compassionate beyond anyone or anything I have ever encountered. You're considerate of everyone, no matter who they are." He explains. You feel yourself tear up at his words. Looking into his eyes, you can tell...
He is telling the truth. 100%.
You smile wide, letting a few stray tears fall. "Th-Thanks.." You say, sniffling and wiping your face. He nods, smiling back.
The rest of the evening was spent helping him finish up his project, then watching movies on his TV.
