Daichi and Sugawara had known each other since their first year of middle school and they had been inseparable ever since. Sleepovers every weekend and hanging out every day after volleyball practice. Everyone knew the two had an unbreakable bond, but not many people knew about Sugawara's secret. The only person that knew was Daichi, he was the only person Suga felt he could truly trust with this secret. The secret that would ruin him if it got out; he was gay. Daichi, of course, was extremely supportive and even helped his best friend get dates but none of them had ever worked out since the only person on Suga's mind was Daichi. Now of course he knew that his crush was straight and had a girlfriend, but he couldn't help himself. The strong and muscular build of the other male, the height difference that may have only been an inch but felt like a foot when he looked down at him and smiled, the way they acted as though they had known each other since birth; it was just a few of the reasons why Suga couldn't help but fall head over heels for his best friend. But that was all it would ever be: just friends. Suga hated the fact that no matter what he fantasized about at night when he would hold his pillow close to him and pretend it was Daichi, he would never reciprocate the feelings. It was a one sided love and it was slowly killing Sugawara.
One day after volleyball practice, Suga had a pain in his chest and went into the bathroom for some privacy. We went into the larger stall and sat down. He felt a tickle in his throat and when he coughed to relieve it, half of a premature lily petal came up and he knew exactly what was going on. Hanahaki disease. Extremely easy to diagnose by the symptoms, but fatale if not cured in time by the other person returning the feelings to the infected. Suga knew he had no chance of being cured seeing as how Daichi had a girlfriend and had no romantic feelings towards the other boy. Suga began to cry as he realized what was happening; he was dying. Daichi noticed his friend missing so he hurried off to the bathroom to find him. When he entered the room, he heard the sound of his best friend's cries and got closer. He saw the petals of a very young lily every now and then on the floor leading to the stall Suga was hiding in.
"Koushi, is everything okay in there?" He asked softly as he attempted to push open the door.
"I um, I'm okay, Dai. Don't worry about me, I'll be out in a minute and we can head over to my place," the grey haired male responded from the other side of the door.
Daichi walked back out to the rest of the team and saw that everyone but Ennoshita had left.
"He okay?" Ennoshita asked the other boy.
"I'm not too sure, he was crying in the bathroom and there were flower petals..." Daichi responded
"Hm, I don't know man, maybe he got stood up for a date,"
"Yeah, maybe," Daichi said, "you can head out, Suga'll be out in a minute,"
"Alright, see ya captain," Ennoshita sighed tiredly as he walked out of the gym.
A few minutes later, the grey haired male emerged with red puffy eyes and Daichi saw a single tear fall from Suga's left eye, flowing smoothly over the beauty mark on the smaller male.
"You alright there bud?" Daichi asked as his friend came closer.
"Y-yeah, just not in a great headspace I guess," he sighed with his head hung low and the hood of his Karasuno volleyball club zip-up over his head, "my place or yours?" He asked the captain.
"Yours is fine," he spoke, worried about his friend but not wanting to make it worse by asking questions.
The pair walked back to Suga's house in a comfortable silence. Or that was what it seemed like to any passerbys. In reality though, the two were in their own world: Suga not knowing how long it would take for the disease to destroy his lungs and kill him; Daichi worrying about his best friend and not knowing how to help. Suga could feel another petal making its way up his esophagus and tickling the back of his throat. He put his hand up to his mouth and coughed, getting the flower petals to fall into his hand. He put the petals of the slightly more matured lily in the pocket of his winter jacket and continued walking in silence. He began thinking about how he would have to stop playing the sport he loved and how Kageyama would end up being the only setter on the team although Suga knew the younger man would be fine on his own. He sighed a breath of cold air as he opened the door to his house and let the both of them in. They both went upstairs and grabbed towels and a fresh pair of clothes and went to shower. The Sugawara house had two showers so they could both shower at the same time. As Suga headed into the bathroom, he coughed without holding back and a full lily fell out of his mouth. It was a beautiful flower, pinks and blues on the petals with a bright yellow center. He turned on the shower and began to wash himself, using his signature floral scented hair and body wash which made him sick as he was already living with the constant scent of flowers filling his nose. Instead of puking, however, only the petals of lilies came out, scattering on the shower floor beneath him. He washed himself off and got out of the shower, drying himself and getting dressed. He threw on an oversized t-shirt and a pair of short shorts. He walked out of the humid bathroom to find his friend already sitting on his bed with a bowl of popcorn. Suga chuckled before walking over to the bed and sitting next to Daichi.
