It was the first volleyball tournament Hinata had ever been to. The smell of air salonpas filling his nose as he took in the sight of all the other middle school teams there. Then he saw him; the king of the court. There was at least five inches between the two boys but most likely more. The boys locked eyes for a split second causing Kageyama to set the ball with too much force during practice.
"Shit, sorry guys," he spoke under his breath so no one could hear, "get it together guys, only the best stay in the court!" He projected to his team to keep up is tough facade. His teammates only groaned in response and gave him dirty looks. Little did they know, their captain had just seen the most beautiful boy ever. And the same goes for the other team. Hinata felt his face heat up as butterflies began forming in his stomach. He quickly brushed away the feeling, knowing that there was no way Tobio Kageyama would be gay and even if he was, no way he would be interested in a short, orange haired boy like himself. When it was time for Hinata's team to play, he notice a few things: one, how much taller the other team was, two, how much bigger the other team was, and three, how much more serious the other team was. Hinata was freaking out for a second until he saw the setter from the other team. His brilliant blue eyes against his clear skin and ink black hair was stunning. The two locked eyes again for a bit longer this time and it calmed the shorter male down almost immediately. They broke eye contact and got ready for the game. Hinata's team lost severely, their only points coming from the other teams mess ups; namely Kageyama getting distracted with less then innocent thoughts about Hinata.
After the game, Kageyama pulled the smaller boy to the side so he could get his phone number. Hinata's face was covered with a dusty rose color as the butterflies returned to his stomach. He happily gave his number away and thought he saw a small smirk from Kageyama but it quickly returned to his regular scowl. He gave a small bow and walked away to be with the rest of his team. Of everyone on his team, Toruu Oikawa was the only one who kinda sorta didn't mind the setter. He knew he was gay and would occasionally talk to him if he noticed the usually straight faced boy's lips in a bit of a curve at the end and a light pink across his cheeks.
"So, you get his number, Tobio-Chan ?" Oikawa asked intrigued, "I think the whole team noticed how off your game you were today," he laughed in his iconically smug voice.
"Yes I got his number, idiot," Kageyama mumbled in response, "I don't even know if he's gay though. And he probably knows my personality so he wouldn't be interested either way," he sighed as he walked over to the water bottles and taking a sip of his before the next match. The day continued with matches and Oikawa's relentless teasing for Kageyama while back with Hinata, he was just getting back home and setting his bags down. He got out of his jersey and tossed it in the hamper at the foot of his bed before grabbing a towel and running a warm bath for himself. He couldn't get Kageyama out of his head so he decided to text him despite knowing he still had a match or two left before he was done for the day.'Uh, hey Kageyama... its Shouyo Hinata from the tournament...' he typed out before pressing send.
'Oh, hey Sho, I just finished up the last match for today. Maybe you could come watch tomorrow and we could hang out in between my matches? What are you doing?' Kageyama responded about half an hour later.
'Just got home and about to get in the bath. I would love to come watch you tomorrow!'
Kageyama felt his face heat up at the thought of Hinata getting into the bath. 'Great, I'll see you tomorrow then... gn.'
'Gn' Hinata sent, ending the conversation. He was in the bath for something like 30 minutes before putting the towel around his waist and walking down the hall to his room. He blow dried his fluffy orange hair and put on a pair of shorts and a baggy t-shirt. He walked out of his room to the smell of homemade ramen made by his mom and little sister.
"Hey Natsu!" He exclaimed as he ruffled her hair that was similar to his own, "hey mom," he said more calmly as he kissed her on the cheek.
"Hey kiddo, how was the game?" She questioned.
"Eh, we lost in the first round to this really good school but it was really fun and I met someone pretty cool!"
"Well it sucks that you lost, but you had fun and you made a new friend so I'd say it was a win," his mom reassured as she handed him a bowl of tokonatsu ramen.
"Mmmmmm, this is delicious!" He shouted in excitement as he slurped the rest of the noodles and drank the broth in mere minutes. After he finished getting 3 more bowls and finishing all of them with just as much energy, he jumped up and went to his room to practice. He was practicing his sets which were extremely messy when he felt a pain in his chest that made him drop to the floor for a second. The pain subsided after a minute or so, but he took it as a sign to stop practicing for the day and get some rest before meeting Kageyama the next day.
