The Football Tryout

Billy Roland was excited to try out for Trinity University's football team. The team went 3-9 last season, losing to all their conference opponents. It was a disaster season. Prior to that, they had made the playoffs 7 consecutive times. Then, it got stranger. One of the players transferred to rival Star College in Rhode Island and one player decided to focus on academics instead of football and left the team willingly. This had an immediate effect on the team losing season.

Billy Roland was asked by the coach to be the QB in this tryout. His hands gripped the ball. It was humid outside and he was nervous sweating right now. He looked as two players, Dylan Ryland and Shaun Cook tried to tackle him, but he let go of the ball to the left side of the field. It was an incredible catch by transfer player Eddie Rain. It was a 67 yard touchdown pass. As Billy was tackled to the ground, he put one thumb up as a sign of success. The coach was impressed by this. All right everyone, I want all of you to be in full physical shape so I want everyone to drop down and do 20 pushups, 20 situps, then run the track surrounding the field. A big groan was heard but the coach silenced them. You did not come here to be youth football players. You all came here to be NCAA division III stars. Scouts don't believe in any of you, so you have to go out there and prove yourself. If you want to play for the Patriots, the Rams, the Bengals, or any other NFL team, it starts here. So don't let yourself down. Give me those exercises now.

Billy Roland dropped to his hands and feet and did the pushups. It was very tiring and he did not wanted to do the situps but he needed to continue his training. 2 hours later, everyone was finished. All right, good effort guys. Now, let's do something different today. Billy, continue to be the QB. Run the ball instead of passing. Sam Hope snapped the ball to Billy. He ran the ball but he was tackled in the middle for only a 1 yard gain. Run it again said the coach. Sam snapped him the ball. Billy stepped back and ran to the left. He was tackled after a 5 yard gain. We have a long way to go thought the coach.

Billy was inserted into a time pressure situation. It's 4th and 10 and our team is down by 4 and there are no timeouts. Throw a touchdown and win it. Billy was chased by 3 opposing players. He faked a run, stepped back and threw a pass down the middle. Wide Received Dante Flum caught the ball, and for a moment he bolted down the field but he was tackled just short of the goal line. Nice effort Billy yelled the coach. It did not work out this time but that was a great pass.

Get to the showers kids. We will pick this back up tomorrow. Billy Roland was pleased by what he was able to do in the morning.
