The problem with living out in the middle of nowhere is that sometimes you get a little bored. Or, well correction you get super fucking bored.Small things like Theseus and Tommy had spruced up life a little, but even the excitement over them died down once they became permanent fixtures in their life. Or abandoned them. And as much as Wilbur adored Tommy, the little gremlin sometimes took joy in pretending he didn't exist and making his life a living hell.
Or well, maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration, but Wilbur thinks it's justified in the moment.
"What do you mean I'm not allowed to go?" Wilbur frowned, crossing his arms.
"It's a pretty simple concept to wrap your head around," Techno pointed out, swinging his bag around his shoulder and handing Tommy an identical one.
"But I want to go with you, I'm going to be bored all day if I don't," Wilbur looked to Tommy, eyes wide and pleading.
"Not my problem," Tommy said cheerfully, betraying their friendship a thousand times over. "Let's go Techno."
"You bitch!" Wilbur called out to him, scandalized as Tommy grabbed Techno's hand and pulled him towards the door. "I thought I was your favourite!"
"You didn't let me drink your coffee this morning," Tommy called out over his shoulder, Wilbur letting out a cry as the door slammed shut, sealing his fate to another boring day. Curse them.
Apparently Tommy knew this super cool hiking trail an hours walk away, and only Techno was allowed to come see it with him for some reason.
To make it worse, Phil was fixing the water pipe to one of the houses, a one-person job that he banned Wilbur from doing after Wilbur accidentally flooded the basement that one time. To make it completely unbearable, all the other chores were done so he really had nothing to do.
Wilbur theoretically could find something. He could lounge at the beach or play his guitar, but neither sounded very appealing. He could try and bake some stuff, but that was so much effort. Obviously, there was one last option.
"Phil!" He shouted as he skipped into the guest house, hearing a strangled shout as his father banged his head on the pipe in surprise. "I'm going into town."
"You're doing what?" Phil's head popped up, a hand rubbing his forehead as he narrowed his eyes. "That's hours away Wil."
"Yeah, but you see, I'm very bored," Wilbur clapped his hands. "And I haven't been into town yet, only you have."
"That's because we never have to go into town for anything other than the two supply runs that are required for our stay," Phil said slowly. "I mean, go if you want to, but that's a long commute for being bored."
"Never underestimate the power of being bored," Wilbur said cheerfully as he left the house, rushing to the car as fast as he could. He liked doing new things, and Phil had said there was this really nice bakery in town. He couldn't wait to check it out.
Wilbur didn't like driving that much. Luckily the town he lived in had been fairly small so he was able to walk everywhere or just take a bus. He knew how to drive, something his mother forced him to do, but it was never his favourite thing. Too many crowded streets, abrupt turns, idiots driving around.
It's his first time in a car since his mothers' accident. He tries hard not to think about it as he grips the wheel, carefully adjusting the mirrors to the position he needed them to be in. His hands shake slightly as he grips the wheel, taking a deep breath in.
It was a beautiful day. No rain in sight. There shouldn't be anyone on the road until he gets close to town, and even then there probably would only be a few people. There were no red lights to run, no squealing tires, no dark skies and rain to obscure the view.
