Dream woke up early the next morning, unease settling low in his stomach because he didn't think George would actually show up. But he got ready anyway, pulling on comfortable clothes because the only thing he really had planned for that morning was training.
Most of the team was too jet lagged to be up yet, and Sapnap was going to be spending the morning with Karl. And so Dream headed over to the training area by himself, figuring he could at least get some practice in before anyone else showed up.
Before he even pushed open the door to the training room, he could hear the unmistakable sound of a knife slicing through the air and sinking into a target. Surprised that anyone was here, Dream pushed the door open, eyebrows raising in shock as he took in the sight of George busying himself with target practice.
Dream had convinced himself on the way over that George wouldn't show. He smiled out of habit at the very sight of him; he didn't really care if George ignored him, just so long as he was actually here.
He moved into the room slowly, slipping his jacket off and dropping it onto a chair as George continued throwing knives into the target. Three tosses later, and he finally spoke without so much as turning around, "were you planning on saying hello, or are you just going to stand there and watch me like a creep, Dream?"
Dream couldn't help the quiet laugh that slipped out, leaning against the edge of the table with his arms folded loosely over his chest as he responded, "I didn't realize you were done ignoring me."
George only scoffed at the words, and Dream saw the subtle shake of his head. But he couldn't see George's face, so he had no way of knowing what type of mood he was in.
Knowing he had to start somewhere, he spoke George's name just loud enough to get his attention again.
George stilled, turning to face him finally, and Dream's eyes scanned over an expression that was neutral and completely unreadable. Before more words could spill out, George was filling the silence, "I don't want to talk about it right now, Dream. If you try, I will throw one of these knives at you."
Despite the threat, Dream laughed under this breath, hands raising in surrender as he muttered, "I don't doubt that. But fine, I won't try to apologize then."
George didn't answer, he only held Dream's gaze for a moment, still giving nothing away as he turned back towards the target. Another knife left his hand, hitting just left of his center mark, and Dream could help but quietly say, "you know, your stance is all wrong, George."
It was strangely reminiscent of their last meeting in a training room, even if the roles were reversed. He heard George exhale sharply in response, and when the brunette looked over his shoulder, Dream could see a familiar competitive heat behind his dark eyes as he muttered back, "maybe, but someone told me that your stance doesn't really matter in a real life situation. And besides, I'm still better than you."
Proud of himself for using Dream's own words against him, he gave Dream a smug grin. Dream only shook his head as George refocused on the target. With his arm raised and ready to throw again, Dream muttered, "in your dreams, maybe."
George stilled, fingers tensing around the handle of the knife as he let his hand lower back down to his side. With a raise of his eyebrow, he responded, "oh yeah? If you're so confident, come here and show me how it's done."
Dream pushed away from the table slowly, the low spoken challenge hanging in the air between them. The energy in the room felt tense and thick, but they both knew Dream wouldn't be able to say no.
He crossed the room in a few long strides, walking straight up to George and calmly holding his gaze. He reached for George's wrist, fingers wrapping around loosely before sliding down into the palm of his hand to grab the knife from him. George let his hand fall away, stepping back and motioning towards the target as he muttered, "go on, then."
