Dick's Pov

December 9th 7:23 a.m.
Gotham
My apartment

I could hear the phone ringing. That's all it ever seemed to do these days. All throughout the night and at 4 in the morning. Calls. Calls. More calls.

All to make sure I wasn't dead or somewhere making irreversible decisions. I stopped answering two weeks ago and my voicemail got full after a day. I was just thankful the only one who came to the apartment to check on me was Alfred.

My eyes were still closed but I could hear everything around me. The fan barely circulating. The car yard next door. The faucet I could never fix dripping water. Then the fucking ringing. This was the fourth time she'd called this morning.

I picked my phone up and pushed it up to my ear.

"Yeah?"

"We needed you last night."

"I had things to figure out." I sat up and ran my hand over my face. My briefcase was still open and a picture of Genisis Blake was staring back at me. It was enough for me to want to end the call and go back to sleep all together.

"Again? She's more important than the Joker? He almost killed someone last night." I shut the case and leaned my elbows against my knees.

"I told you she was leaving soon. The next few days I'll be back."

"She's a mobster Dick. She'll turn on you the second she sees money and an out. We all know she will. That's what we've been trying to tell you."

"It's not a team case so don't worry about it."

"We're just a team now? If I remember correctly, we used to be all you had," Barbra's voice ripped into me. "Why does it take a few weeks of knowing some girl for you to do a complete 180?"

"It's not about Claire. It's never been about Claire. And you know that. Don't make this about her. You and Bruce can deal with your own psychos while I deal with mine. And this isn't a 180, I left the manor months ago."

I could be as annoyed as I wanted about Barbara being nosy, but I couldn't really blame her. We'd discussed it once and it didn't end well. In anyone's favor. I left it at that but she couldn't put it down.

"But you still use to talk to me. Even after the breakup."

"Babs, I need to deal with this. Please don't get in the way."

"Get in the way? You're starting to sound like Bruce." I took the phone from my ear and looked at the time. "And just so you know I'm not calling because of him either; I'm calling because we're all worried."

"Don't be."

"Oh my god! I know you okay! I know how you get, so it's better that she leaves now before something bad happens. To both of you."
