The Splintered

Arrival

A commotion was stirring outside the aquarium entrance, normally I'd ignore this sort of thing but I had a feeling to check this one out. Pushing out the glass doors, Ezra and my mother were right behind me as my heels clicked on the sidewalk. My eyes widened seeing a vertical oval-type ship sitting in the earth's atmosphere. It was only one, then suddenly there were two and three. They continued to multiply as I was already making my way to my mother's car. Ezra started to get in but I urged him.

"Ezra go get your parents."

"Anthony-"

"Trust me."

Ezra didn't like it but hopped on his motorcycle and rode in the opposite direction of us. People on the highway were driving crazy as you can expect, but I and my mother somehow made it home. Our neighbors were already packing their vans, my mother and I rushed into the house only grabbing essentials and shoving them in the backseat or trunk. On the phone, with Ezra, he said he was on his way to me but I yelled.

"Don't! We don't know what happens next-"

"I want to be with you no matter what happens next!"

A silence fell between us, suddenly my phone short-circuited it causing me to drop it. The car battery shorted out as well as smoke rose from the hood, my mother and I locked eyes before an alien oval-shaped ship came to greet over our neighborhood. It was only about 120 feet from the ground, a few people were running away because the rest of us were ready for whatever fate awaited us next.

Now we begin

I heard inside of my head, as I turned to my mother who was suddenly fizzling out of existence as if she was fog.

"Mom? MOM!"

She reached for me and I her, though we were only a foot apart she was gone just like that. Ashes fell at my feet as I scattered them around in complete disbelief. Wails of sadness rang out into the sky including my own. And just as suddenly, the alien ships left as soon as they came. I knew they were coming back, but at the moment I just retreated into my home. Watching the news, on pins and needles for every message that flashed through the screen.

"It seems we were wrong America, and for that, we are truly sorry-"

"Where are my kids?!"

"Where are my parents?!"

Rang out from citizens to the POTUS and government officials, they had no answers. I don't know why I kept trying to find them through the tv. I just needed to distract myself from the gaping hole inside my chest that was growing bigger and bigger by the day.

I flinched up from the couch with food crumbs and drool on my face. I hid in my father's office, the lights were already turned off so it was just a matter of silencing my breathing. The rioting reached here in a matter of days and considering looting was a very real possibility I didn't know what to think. Once the footsteps faded, the door swung open suddenly as I grabbed the baseball bat to see Ezra he locked the front door back as I dropped the bat.

"Ezra..."

I finally said I could see his puffy eyes I didn't need to ask to know what happened to his parents. My lip started to quiver a bit since he didn't need to ask me. We hugged and cried for a while. We moved to my bedroom playing in each other's hair. A silence was over us, thick enough to cut a knife.

"Thank you."

Ezra suddenly said which cause my gaze to rise and settle. I replied.

"For what?"

"Despite you going through hell, you made sure to put me first."

"That's what a partner is supposed to do."

I retorted as he kissed my lips, I kissed him back for a moment we pulled away from each other. Wondering if we should even be allowed to do this after what we just experienced. Then something else flooded our minds, what if we never get to do it again? That concluded it, and we started to make out again but more passionate and desperate.

"I love you..."

I whispered as he whispered back.

"I love you too..."

In the dark with only the moon providing light through the window, we stripped down onto nothing. Letting our love and lust block out the terrors of outside. He ran his lips over my sensitive parts, once inside me he held me close and ran me over the edge again and again. I repaid him with the same treatment, once we got all the sexual tension and erotic highs all done and accounted for we embraced each other. Exhausted, but completely at peace. Normally I'd be knocked by now but I was up, and so was he.

"I promise to be by your side forever."

Ezra said kissing my nose as I declared.

"I promise to always love and respect you."

We shook on it before letting sleep take over. The next day we showered together and had breakfast, it was hard to eat. Thinking that my mother was an alien's breakfast right now, Ezra stopped the thought with his eyes. Like he was telling me to come on back to him.

"Sorry."

"It's okay, I think of it too."

We left it at that, as the hours passed quickly. At exactly 6 pm, the alien's ships returned as I stepped out of the house so did Ezra.

I heard in my head as I gasped knowing exactly what Ezra was thinking. Jumping in front of him, a single beam shined down from the alien oval ship taking anyone who stepped into the white light.

"Don't do this-"

"I have to Anthony-"

"No, you don't! You don't get to leave me too!"

I screamed gripping his collar with my hands.

"I have to leave you to save you. Save this planet-"

"I'll never see you again!"

Ezra kissed my knuckles as I shook my head no, he concluded.

"I will always be with you."

I winced feeling him punch me in the stomach, not lethal but it knocked the air out of me. I reached for him, but my hands slipped through his fingers as he walked away from me. The farther he got the wails got bigger.

"Ezra!"

He was crying, even though his back was turned I knew it.

"NO! Ezra!"

As soon as he touched the light, he was teleported up into the ship. Suddenly though, a blue-type mist started to spread out from the head of the ship. Suddenly my nose started to bleed, and others were collapsing around me. Soon it got hard to breathe as I held my neck crawling on the ground but it was futile, I was dying.

This world will be born anew, humanity will evolve.

Was the last thing I heard before everything spiraled into black.
