Number 737, Regulation 59–"No leaving the resting dormitories at times not permitted will be tolerated."—has just been violated. Correct it immediately.
The voice in my head told me I violated a regulation.
The hall was dark and quiet, the one light that showed my way was the white one leaking under doors and from tiny square bulbs on the roof that hardly illuminated the area at all.
But it was enough.
The floor was cold and it stung my bare feet, making me curl my toes. I swallowed uneasily, my heart pounding loud enough to make me worry that others could hear it too.
It was too quiet.
I began to tip-toe through the halls, and I held my breath—scared it was too loud. My legs trembled as I held the keycard to my chest.
I vaguely remembered where the door to Facility B was, but I'm sure with some time—I would be able to find it. And I would definitely recognize it.
I was careful when I turned corners, making sure no one was patrolling the halls where I was walking. I wanted to assume no one was out here, but I knew that wasn't a safe thing to do. I knew there was staff walking through the halls—I just hoped it wasn't Theo.
Or the Master.
Step by step, I walked through the empty facility. I listened carefully, watching out for the sounds of footsteps or talking. The sounds of doors opening or shutting.
I couldn't mess up, I had to be careful.
In a surprisingly short amount of time, I found the door. It looked just like every other door, except for the extra restraint and metal that surrounded it, making it harder for people to break in.
If you hadn't been here before—if you didn't know where it led—you wouldn't think it was any different than the others.
I swallowed.
This was too easy.
I held the keycard up, looking around. No one was here—no one was watching.
I swiped the keycard against the scanner—a sudden and loud beeping sound following it.
I jumped back as the noise reverberated through the halls. It echoed, and I realized it seemed a lot louder than earlier. I was afraid I would be caught.
My heart pounded quickly in my chest.
I waited in the shadows against the wall—waiting and watching. But no matter how long I waited, no one came. If anyone did hear the beep, they didn't expect it was someone like me.
I slowly moved out from the shadows, creeping towards the door once again. It was too easy...something must be waiting for me, it has to be more difficult.
I reached towards the handle, only for the door to beep again. I heard the sound of it locking once again, and quickly realized there was a time limit on how long the door can be unlocked by the keycard.
My heart dropped in my chest.
That didn't happen earlier with Theo.
I gasped as I stumbled back, slowly coming to realize what the beep was for. It was to signal that I didn't open the door—that the time limit to enter was over.
It was to signal that I opened the door, but I didn't go in.
Who would unlock the door to Facility B without entering?
