I looked around, my heart pounding loudly in my ears.

I haven't seen an open door once in this facility, and the fact that there was one now didn't make me feel so well. In fact, I was smart enough that I knew it wasn't originally open.

Someone opened it—recently.

I held my breath, refusing to back away or near any closer. The staff earlier did state that the Master was in Facility B. If that's true, he might be here. He might be looking around for me.

He might have been the one to open the door—and he might be waiting inside for me.

Cold sweat coated my body as I looked around in the darkness, trying to decide whether I should check out the room or not. I knew it wasn't safe—and I knew it was most definitely a trap.

But without the keycard, I had nowhere else to look.

And what if the exit was that way?

Even if it was a trap, I couldn't risk losing the chance to find the exit. Even if I was caught, I had a feeling I would still have the chance to look again—considering the Master liked me and all. I could come back another time with the certainty that this was the way out.

But what if the Master was waiting on me, and it wasn't the exit?

I bit my lip. If I was him, I would probably do something like that too. I would assume the child was trying to escape, and I would catch them in the act.

Either way, the door was opened intentionally.

I reached down and sliced the last line into my skin, the pinch letting me know it was there.

My map was complete.

I swallowed a hiss of fear, my legs beginning to tremble beneath me.

Something was drawing me in...

I suddenly shook my head, stumbling back. No, it wasn't a good idea. This door led somewhere, I knew it. I would wait until another day—when the Master wasn't expecting me.

I would find another keycard and follow the map—and if the door was locked, I would be able to unlock it again.

Today wasn't the day. It wasn't safe—something was waiting—

Before I could turn around, before I could make my way out of the hall, something made me pause—and I could feel myself shiver. My mouth fell open, and I could feel my brain shut down.

"Go, Harper."

The voice was familiar.

With the noise, a set of footsteps followed—and before I could understand what was happening, I booked it.

I didn't know if the noise belonged to me or not, if the sounds were just inside my head—but I didn't think as I stumbled across the floor—

Right into the open door.

I hurriedly stumbled into the shadows, not bothering to shut the door as I was too afraid whoever it was saw me. If the voice was real—they might've watched me come into this room.

If they could even see me in the dark.

My breath was shaky as I thought about how oddly intentional the voice sounded, how strange and specifically placed the footsteps were. How everything seemed so planned
