Mackenzie's POV
Promises are a uniquely human way of ordering the future, making it predictable and reliable to the extent that it is humanly possible.
Ever since we lost Dad, things really got hard. Before Dad died, I promised him I would work hard and make it in life so that my mom and brother would live a comfortable life. Fortunately for me, my hardwork paid off. I was auspicious to gain a scholarship to one of the best universities in the United States and so we moved to settle there.
Mom couldn't work because she had a heart disease and if she did anything that would put pressure on her heart, she could die. The doctors told us she could be cured, but she would have to go through surgery. For this reason, It was up to me to fend for the family.
I started hunting for jobs as soon as we got an apartment. We had enough money on us to pay the rent for the first few months. Finding a job wasn't that easy. It took me weeks before I was able to find a job. The Job didn't pay much, but it did help out a little.
****************************
It was an unusual windy day, and I was trying so had to hold my hair into a pony tail. I was so distracted trying to tie up my hair that I didn't realise a car almost crashed into me.
"Shit.. I'm really sorry." The guy driving the car apologised as soon as
he got out of the car"It was partly my fault. I wasn't exactly watching my steps."
"I guess we were both at fault because I wasn't watching the road at the moment. I'm usually careful."
"I guess we both were. "
"I'm Austin. What's your name"?
"I'm Mackenzie "
" Lovely name. Where are you headed to"
"I'm heading to the North dance school"
" I was actually heading that way. I am one of the students at the school.can I drop you since we are both heading to the same direction. "
"I'm actually okay walking there"
"I insist."
"Alright." I answered, still skeptical about whether to get in the car with him or not.
We got there really quickly. As soon as we got to the school, Austin opened the door for me.
"Are you also a student here." He asked as we entered the school.
"Uh.no. I work here"
"Oh so you're one of the teachers"
"Haha..I wish.I'm just the secretary's assistant"
"Oh.. That's nice." He replied
"Uh.. yh"
I was just about to leave when he held my hand to stop and so I did.
"Kenzie can we be friends? I would like to hang out with you. I know it's kinda creepy asking you to be my friend when we just met but I'd really be glad if you said yes" He grinned
"Um.Why?... not to be rude, but don't you have rich friends you would
rather hang out with?""Haha.. I do have friends but all they talk about is their cars and how much money they have. I just want a friend who likes me not for my parent's money and someone I can talk to about anything which isn't about money."
"Oh.then you came to the right person" I joked
"Anyways i have to go.. but i would really like it if we could have lunch together. So let's meet up here when it's lunch time Bye"
"Bye.." and with that we both went our separate ways
