February 13. Friday. Mel's fifteenth birthday. Dooms day.
I waited by her locker with her present, but Mel didn't come to school.
I called her. left messages on her cell and land-line. She didn't pick up.
It wasn't for a week that she called me back.
"Mel."
"Hi." She sounded breathless and strange.
"Where are you?"
"I'm at the airport. I'm coming home."
"Hell, Melany, where've you been?"
"Ryan-" She paused, then dropped her voice to a whisper. "They're not my parents."
I didn't know what to say, so I just sat stupidly with my mouth open, and waited for her to fill the silence.
"My birth mother's dead. I have a sister." I could hear now that she'd been crying. "Her name's Theresa. We're twins."
"Wow." Was all I could muster. So I said it again. "Wow."
"She's coming to live with us...C-could you meet us there? I can't do this on my own."
"Okay."
"There's a key under the mat. We'll be there in an hour or so."
"I'll be there."
"Bye."
"See you."
"Ryan-?" She caught me as I went to hang up.
"Yeah?"
"Thankyou."
They arrived. Mr. Liss hovered awkwardly while Mrs. Liss puttered anxiously about, preparing a bed for Theresa, starting dinner, anything but look Mel in the eye.
Melany stood across the room, side by side with her sister. If it weren't for the black hair dye, dark makeup, and general sicklyness of the girl, they would have been identical, but Theresa was rail thin. Her skin tinted gray. Mel beside her was red eyed and round cheeked, the usual warm smile wiped from her face.
Mel was stressed. I'd never seen her so upset. But Theresa just watched with cold, lifeless eyes. Eyes showing no signs of fear or pain. No love, empathy, or regret.
I couldn't look away from those eyes.
Heyy so, its me. Dont worry it gets scarier :) Just gotta build up the characters first...they're kinda important since they're my guinea pigs.
