It was March. The air was beginning to smell of spring, like mud and rain and flowers. The creek in the woods began to melt, the world became a cold, slushy mush as mother nature suffered her annual mood swings, caught between summer and winter.
Mel's POV.
She slapped me. Hard across the face. My cheek stung. I hung my head, afraid to meet her cold blue eyes. I stood against the wall for a long, still moment. Slush soaked through my boots
"You're failing." She hissed.
"I'm sorry --" My voice faltered as I choked on a sob. She grabbed my face and yanked it around to meet her's. I had expected her to be angry, to glare, but her eyes were devoid of emotion.
"Don't test me." She released her grip and left me in the alley. I stood there, silent and lost, not knowing what to do. Moments slid by, the sky began to darken. I stood in the alley, unmoving.
Ryan found me.
"Mel." He said. "They're looking for you. What are you doing?" I looked up at him, at his concerned eyes. He stopped. "Your face...What happened? What's wrong?" His fingers touched the red lines left by Resa's, brushed away the sharp pain of her slap.
I broke down and told him everything. Crying 'till my eyes swelled red. He pulled me in, holding me until I had at last revealed the truth about Resa. I thought it was over. We agreed to tell the police the next morning. I promised I'd call him if anything happened.
I shouldn't have gone home.
My parents were going to a concert. They left us alone with frozen pizza to fend for ourselves. I wasn't afraid, if anything happened I had Ryan. My torment would end tomorrow, I could survive one more night of her.
I wasn't afraid.
I should have been.
As soon as the door closed behind my parents, Resa turned on me. "Rat." She spat. "I know you told." I stepped away from her. She followed me, backing me into the kitchen. I reached for my phone, but the screen flashed red letters. I pressed the buttons, shoock it, desperate for it to return to life, but it continued to display the same word;
Tattle-Tale.
Tattle-Tale.
Tattle--
I dropped the phone. Resa was before me, a butcher's knife tight in her fist. The blade glistened as she edged forward. "I warned you." She whispered. "I warned you." I tripped over a stool, crashing to the ground. I scrambled backwards, but my body wouldn't move fast enough. I turned and crawled, almost there, one more step...
I felt cold fingers nest themselves into my hair, pull my head back, expose my bare throat.
"No!" I screamed. I twisted against her, but she pressed her foot into my back, holding me down. She leaned over me, she looked into my eyes, and for the first time, I saw something in them. Emotion.
Fear.
She struck my head with the knife handle.
Fear.
Stars.
Blackness.
Nothing.
Resa's pov.
Melany lay on the floor, unmoving, eyes closed. I didn't stop to check if she was still alive. I lifted the body, tossing it out onto the back porch. Back in the kitchen, I mopped up the blood and cleaned the knife hilt. Her parents would be home in just a few hours, and I had work to do.
It was time to disapear.
Forever this time.
It was time to end Theresa Williams and Melany Liss.
