I made a mistake.
A big mistake.
That night that I invited my friends over.
I was only thirteen at the time.
I didn't know any better.
It was supposed to be fun.
It was supposed to be carefree.
But... it was a bloodbath instead.
I remember how it started, how I invited a few of the girls in my school over for a sleepover at my house. It was two days until my fourteenth birthday and... this was my equavelent of having a huge party with my friends. I remember smiling, for real, as I opened the door and let them inside. There were three of them, Abby, Caroline, and Racheal. They were all popular and pretty and... I'm not sure how I was ever friends with them. But all three returned the grin and came inside. We had cake and pizza (in that order)
Then, I made the biggest mistake of my life.
I was a huge video gaming fan at the time, and asked if my friends and I could play Majora's Mask on my families N64. I thought that my friends would enjoy a scary game. News Flash, they did not, and I ended up playing Majora's Mask while also playing Truth or Dare with my friends. At some point, my little brother came in, and quietly sat down beside me to watch us play. The first few rounds were harmless. Full of Prank Calls and figuring out who we each had a secret crush on. But the game started to get a bit more serious as Racheal dared Caroline to play Bloody Mary that night. She agreed, because no one passes up a dare, but as we talked about demons, I couldn't help but speek about a demon that was supposed to come from the game I was playing.
So I explained the story of Ben Drowned, and being the stupid young teens that we were, we decided to look up how to summon him. Most of the websites said that you had to open Clever Bot (Whatever that was) but one website that none of us had ever seen before, said to turn off all devices in the room except for the N64, and then call out his name thirteen times. I remember my brother telling me not to do it, and holding onto my arm. But the next time I picked dare, I was dared to summon Ben Drowned.
Of course I agreed.
My friends stayed on the couch, phones now turned off as I switched off all the lights and sat beside my brother. The lights from the screen illuminated us just enough. "Eve... I don't like this" he said, shivering. "Then leave the room" Abby taunted. I wish he had. Oh God I wish he had. "Go on Eve, try it. See if this demon is really all that" Caroline called, crossing her arms and sitting back on the couch. "Alright...."
"Ben Drowned" I said quietly.
"Ben Drowned" the next was a little louder.
"Ben Drowned"
"Ben Drowned"
"Ben Drowned"
"Ben Drowned"
"Ben Drowned"
"Ben Drowned"
"Ben Drowned"
"BEN DROWNED"
"BEN DROWNED!"
"BEN DROWNED!!"
I stopped for a moment. Nothing had changed at this point, everything was just the same. "Come on" said Racheal, huffing. "Alright... Alright..." My hands were shaking, but I finally mustered up the courage.
"Ben Drowned"
The screen flashed red, we all screamed as writing... no.... this wasn't part of the video game. This was written blood, that ran down the TV screen.
You've met a terrible Fate Haven't You?
We all sat their in terror as a hand... an arm.... a person, came from the screen, tumbling to the ground. He had clothes like Link's, but their were broken chains on each of his wrists, his eyes were bleeding, and his teeth were razor sharp. "Who has summoned me?" he asked, with a voice that sounded like it belonged to a rotting corpse. My three friends pointed at me, and Ben Drowned turned on me and my brother. "Ooo.... Fresh Meat" he brought out a knife and started for us. I couldn't move... and neither could my brother, all we could do was cry out in fear.
Ben Drowned through me to the ground and pinned my brother to the couch. I jumped to my feet and moved towards him, only to be knocked back into the TV. I watched as he completely destroyed my brother, his blood on that demon's hands. And then he turned to me, claw like nails reaching for me. For someone who looked like a nine year old, he was incredibly strong, I remember thinking as he pinned me to the ground, running one nail across my face. "You're so pretty..." he said with a taunting smile. "Don't you want to be prettier?" His hand reached down and I screamed in agony as he basically scooped my eye out of its socket. "Oh... hush.... it doesn't hurt that bad" I couldn't open my working eye, I couldn't look at him.
"Come on now... smile for me" he brought out his dagger again. "I hate to destroy a pretty face... but I want to see you smile" he giggled, and I felt like gagging. I could feel the knife cut deep into the fresh around my mouth, going straight through my cheek as he drew a "smile" on my face. I screamed and screamed and screamed. Somewhere, I heard my friends sobbing and screaming as well, though I don't think he even looked at them as he hopped back into the game.
I remember dragging my body towards the N64. I remember using all my strength to take out the Majora's Mask cartridge and chuck it across the room.
I also remember, that it didn't break.
