Feel free to skip to chapter four. A trip to Hogsmeade.
The summer had been a long, unpleasant time. Like a boa Constrictor it had wrapped around Draco and sucked the life out of him.
It was tomorrow he'd be on the train to Hogwarts and the thought of seeing his friends was enough to calm his beating heart.
"Master Malfoy wishes to see you in his study," Peggy, a bruised but gently smiling house elf informed him.
Draco nodded thanking her and with trembling hands he descended the manor stairs- a trip he never enjoyed. He stopped outside the old, oak door and took a shaky breath.
"Come in," Lucius said from inside.
Draco hadn't even knocked.
Malfoy strolled in his walk confident but not cocky. Lucius had spent days correcting his posture and stance so by his eighth birthday he held an air of elegance.
"Draco, my boy," Lucius said with little emotion making the words seem awkward and clumpy in his mouth.
"Yes, Sir," Malfoy replied barely managing to keep his voice steady.
"There's someone I want you to meet,".
Draco was confused. Only the occasional death eater came by the house but they had no interest in him. Not yet anyway.
There was a manic cackle and even though Draco had never been there he was sure similar laughs echoed around the cells of Azkaban.
Bellatrix Lestrange stepped out of the fireplace. His crazy aunt. Malfoy tried to slow his uneven breaths and make sense of the situation.
"Draco," she purred.
"Aunt Bella," He nodded, greeting her. There was a few seconds of awkward silence before anyone spoke and Draco was sure they could hear his heartbeat.
"Well, I'll be on my way. Be good Draco," Lucius sent a meaningful glare his way. Malfoy gulped and by the time his eyes settled back on his aunt, his farther was gone.
Bellatrix walked closer and it took all his strength not to back away.
"When the lord returns he'll need loyal servants, boys who are obedient and do his work without question," Malfoy nodded assuming she meant him, "He'll need talented wizards and that Draco is my job. To build you into exactly that," Draco squirmed uncomfortably. Bellatrix seemed to notice as her eyes darted around him.
"You'd do that for the lord, wouldn't you?" The question might as well have been rhetorical, they both knew he didn't have a choice. Her face held a taunting expression daring Draco to say no. He swallowed his hatred.
"Of course Aunt Bella,".
For once Draco let himself hope, hope that Voldermort would never return. He'd heard stories that made his blood run cold, that made him grateful Lucius wasn't so harsh.
His aunt stayed the rest of the morning writing lists of spells and potions for Draco to learn and books for him to read. Malfoy had to admit apart from nearly shitting himself every time the witch moved he found it slightly enjoyable.
The rest of the afternoon then evening was spent collecting books from the Malfoy Library and sending house elfs to locate anything he couldn't find. It was now 8pm and he had given up any hope of being fed that day.
"Draco!" Lucius called storming in, wherever he'd been had left him beyond angry. His face was dark red and his jaw was clenched.
"Yes sir," Draco responded, bowing his head as he looked at his father's feet.
(trigger warning for abuse)
Lucius grabbed him by the chin, forcing Malfoy to look him in the eye.
"Would you believe it, Harry Potter got away with blowing his aunt up," his dad seethed, "If it had been anyone else the consequence would have been much worse,".
Draco tried to imagine blowing Bellatrix up like a balloon but the image ended in her using the killing curse on him. He found it very unlikely he'd ever be in the golden boy's position.
"Potter should be dead for what he did to the dark lord-" Lucius paused looking at Draco expectantly.
The younger slytherin wasn't sure what to say to this. How did any of this involve him? Before he could think of a suitable answer Lucius hit him in the face with his cane. Malfoy's eyes watered but his father didn't stop there. He kicked Draco in the gut before throwing him to the floor.
"Answer me!" Lucius screamed in his face. Frozen with fear he struggled to find any words, only an embarrassing stutter slipped through his lips.
"Fucking useless," Mr Malfoy seethed kicking Draco in the ribs causing a moan to escape the shaking boy. Lucius pulled him up by the collar punching him square in the face. Malfoy's nose was bleeding but not broken. A stroke of luck for the young boy. However he was sure to have a black eye the following morning. Draco crumpled to the floor in pain and shock.
"Please father, I have school tomorrow," Malfoy whimpered, there was an eerie silence as Lucius caught his breath.
"Stupid boy," he kicked his son in the ribs. Shouting and kicking over and over till Draco was sure the onslaught had been going on for hours. Lucius pulled him up, pinning the shaking child against the wall.
"Do not call me father," Mr Malfoy raged.
Draco bowed his head murmuring, "Yes sir, sorry sir,".
"And Malfoy's do not beg," His shirt was ripped of him and Lucius pressed his wand against Draco's already bruising ribs, "Diffindo," the wand was dragged along Malfoy's skin cutting deep like a knife. Crimson blood stained the wall behind and dripped onto the floor like water from a tap.
Draco bit his lip doing all he could to only let out small, barely noticeable whimpers. Finally the door swung shut and apart from his own sobs the room fell into an empty silence.
⚠️End of trigger warning⚠️
Draco woke later that night lying on his bed as Dobby wrapped bandages around his ribs and cuts.
"Thank you," Draco whispered half-asleep.
"Shh, Dobby here now. Master Draco must sleep".
"Just Draco," Malfoy murmured before drowsiness overtook him and for once he fell into a dreamless sleep.
