Jason
Present Day
My phone buzzed on the bedside table. I slipped it off to read the name. Ryan. I quickly answered pressing the phone to my ear. He stayed silent on his end. It'd been some time since we'd spoken last. Three years into my new life, he longer called unless it was an emergency. I called out to him, my heart thudding violently against my chest. Whatever was happening, I would not be able to get there in time to help.
"She was here," he quietly told me.
What? Who? Oh... I took in a deep breath
"... She was there?" I asked, ever so quietly, but he heard it.
"Yes."
But she wasn't supposed to remember, ever. Three years had come and gone without so much as a whiff of her.
"What happened Ryan?"
"She found the locket, and followed the address."
I smacked my forehead, how stupid of me. I put the address in it! How could I be so reckless?
"You didn't tell her, did you?"
He sighed.
"She was crying. She asked for my help because she was lost. I texted Chris and managed to stall her, but when he got here things got a little crazy. They started arguing and it ended with him sedating her. He said she wouldn't remember anything and that she didn't remember what happened with you, so we shouldn't ever tell her."
"You did well. Never tell her, she can't ever know again."
I rubbed my face heavily. I was afraid of the day this would happen. The dose was supposed to be permanent.
"How did she look?" I asked.
"Upset."
"I can imagine so, but I meant appearance wise. Is she still...?"
"Well, I won't be describing her the way you would, but she looked good. Healthy and strong. She was dressed like she was going to a business meeting, and there was a pin on her lapel."
For a moment I tuned out what he was saying entirely. She was dressed for a business meeting and wearing a lapel pin. Wow... Ryan's voice grabbed my attention again.
"She's licensed to kill now." I explained.
Now it was Ryan's turn to become silent. We hardly spoke of this part of our life. He never asked questions and I never offered any information. It was easier if he didn't know. He had to remain Innocent, and completely in the dark about my life here or else my coming here was for nothing.
"Is it safe for me to be here, still?" he asked.
"Yes, of course. Alyssa would never hurt you."
"What if she comes back?"
"Call Chris and destroy the locket."
"I miss you, Jason. Happy New Year." Ryan said.
"I miss you too, Happy New Year."
I hit the red disconnect button and set the phone back down on the bedside table. Claudia shuffled sleepily under the sheets beside me. I slid down further and wrapped an arm around her torso, pressing my face into the crook of her neck.
She was used to spending most nights with me and now couldn't bring herself to sleep alone. I didn't mind. I didn't like to sleep alone either, these days. She moaned as she awakened and turned over in my embrace. With a sigh she settled back into a deep sleep.
