BEGINNING OF PART I ~ THE BECOMING

The train rocks rhythmically as we move like thieves in the night through the thickly lit town of Infinity Children. My younger sister Posee sat propped against her seat playing a game on her Infinity-pod. The halo shaped device showed a hologram of a new version of the old game Tetris. Her face lit up like the lights of the city when she won the game, I giggled slightly but turned away when she looked at me innocently smile still flashing brightly on her pale face.

"Phlox Sixteen and Posee Nine." The intercom blasted our names filled with static crumpled sounds.

I lifted Posee onto my back, gripped my Knapp sack and her small trunk, shuffling carefully towards the doors of the moving train. Aunt Matilda will be waiting anxious for news on how the training went.

Sure enough, Matilda, was standing at the edge of the tracks, back arched and nose pointed at the ceiling.

The doors glide open as I jolt back a little from the sudden halt.

"You're late." Matilda brushes a strand of hair from her face.

"We couldn't get Posee a ticket." I reply securing Posee on my back.

"What did your instructor say?" She asks immediately.

"Testing starts tomorrow at city hall, I will be placed in either the hybrids or the mutts, and from there they will give me the next test on what my house choices will be." Every sixteen year old in Infinity nation is required to take a test that places you on the path to your future.

Back when the first hybrid humans were bred some didn't perform at as high of a standard as others so they separated them into groups and then into houses. If you succeeded you were placed in Hybrid, and chose your house depending on your personality, the Bright (or the intelligent), the Valiant (the brave), or the Inquisitive (the curious). I was born to the bright, but grew up in the inquisitive with my aunt after my mother died in child birth and my father died somehow, but no one really knows, one day he was here kissing me goodbye as he left for the Infinity war, he didn't come back, the next thing I know I am in a hover-taxi on my way to my Aunts house in the Inquisitive part of Infinity city.

Mutts, on the other hand, are the mistakes, the ones stupid enough to eat wires and fail every test given. They get divide into houses based on their intelligence, the smartest get placed in jobs such as shop clerk, or electrician, and skip further training, the medium, farm and continue training but only for farming intelligence, and the last,  and least smart get sent out of the border to suffer alone.

My Aunt expects me to choose Inquisitive,  for I must become a hybrid, I must... Posee needs me to be in the area,  but it is my choice to go into whatever category pleases me.

A couple Valiant pass me by as we move cautiously along the crowded streets, I find myself watching with amusement at their hurry and exciting look of "edgy wonder" you could say that, I guess.

My little sister tugs at my neck and I know she wishes to stop.

Our home is small and normal compared to others. The walls are at an arch like all others and it is completely sterile once you enter... We only have a cat to keep us company. Dogs were banned before I was born, but I still learn about them in home training, when they send us through simulations and such.

My sister hops of my back and we walk towards our chambers.

"Who is asking to come in?" The loud voice of our home interrupts my daydream of having a pet dog.

"Oh, Posee Nine and Phlox Sixteen." The doors slide open as we enter our room.

I climb up onto the top bunk after undressing and kissing Posee good night. We usually say our prayers together every night. Not very many Infinities believe in a god, I am not even sure if I do, but she does and so I play along.

We don't speak a word tonight... My last night at home is sure to be a quiet one so I embrace it. I don't know what the future will bring and it could be a noisy chambers.

The darkness surrounds me, and soon the vibration of our houses electricity stops and I can only hear the distant sound of the generator and Posee's deep breaths. I can't tell if my eyes are open or closed in the thick black darkness that surrounds me, but they find their way to relaxation and so does my body as slumber overrides my body and sings a lullaby of peace.
