Chapter One: Attack on biscuits

When you love someone, sometimes your head hurts. And it's so agonizing that you want to burst into tears. But even the smallest thing can bring you happiness. It's complicated, but simple. Perhaps all these emotions are irreplaceable and precious ~ Ageha Shiroi from Velvet Blue Rose

Sophie James walked towards the Jacks, arms behind her head and head leaning back as she gazed up at the sky. It was quite a nice day, really; the sun was bearing down on her back, practically blinding her as she looked directly at it. The girl shook her head, looking back down again to avoid loosing her vision. That wouldn't do.
It was Tuesday, the 14th of April 2015. Over two months ago her and her best friend, Alix Bryars, had made a shocking discovery that had changed their lives completely.
It had been a Wednesday -or was it Thursday?- afternoon, the two had just gotten out of school. They'd 'accidentally' walked past the sports centre, where Sophie caught her bus and Alix went to band, and had instead traveled up the perilous Jack And Jill steps. At the top of these steps they found a stormdrain and, being the idiots were, they decided it would be a great idea to jump down it, into the dark pit below. Well, when I say jump I actually mean pushed by a magical cliché wind, but we'll get to that later.
The girl sighed loudly, pulling at the side of her school skirt absently. It was way too hot to be wearing tights yet she did it anyway, brushing a little hair out her eyes as she thought back on last two months of outright craziness. She smiled slightly as she remembered conversations about the storm drain with Alix: they always used to call it a drainpipe, thinking that was its proper name. Well, turned out they were wrong, but they had still called it that out of stubbornness.
No longer. They'd grown up since then. It may have only been two months but the two had changed drastically; killing did that to you. The two friends were Rangers, two in a group of elites that protected the King. And that usually involved killing people. A little over a month ago they'd fought their biggest battle against Will Treaty, an insane mass murderer who just happened to be an ex-Ranger. He was now dead.
Will had been the previous apprentice to their teacher Halt, who was also a Ranger and the father of Alix's boyfriend, Joseph. The thing was that Will was also from their world, having fallen down the drainpipe trying to end his life. There was one other they knew of who had traveled to the Rangers Apprentice world through the drainpipe, and that was a blond boy named Thomas Oblivion.
The three, Sophie, Thomas and Alix, had killed Will. It had been extremely close but they had somehow managed to pull it off, and we're now fully fledged Rangers. Now Sophie was heading towards the Jacks, to meet up with the other two. There they would head down the storm drain, into the world they now called home.

Sophie finally reached the top of the steps, taking a moment to regain her breath before straightening up, smiling slightly at the sight of her two friends. Alix stood with her arms crossed impatiently, leaning against the wall and glaring at her half heartedly. She was wearing casual clothing; they'd change into their Ranger kit once they got to Halt's cabin, where they all lived.
Thomas stood a little closer to the storm drain, smiling slightly at the shorter of the brunets actions. Sophie was the tallest of the three, Alix the smallest, a fact that irked the shortest girl greatly.
"Jeez Sophie, you took forever. Did you stop to buy ice cream again?"
The taller of the two girls just rolled her eyes, looking over at the manhole cover that hid the storm drain. Soon they'd go down, and they wouldn't have to sit through school for another month. Awesome.
