The lonely echoes of my work boots slapping against the pavement bounces off the silent dark houses that I quietly pass by, already fearing my footfalls are too loud, I lift my eyes up from my heavy feet and towards the familiar picket fence surrounding my front garden warding off any passer-by strangers Into entering my freshly mown lawn.
As I near closer to my gate I pull my hand out of my warm pocket and wrap my fingers around the chilled metal of the gate and pull it open, I quickly make short work of scooting through the small gap and shutting it quickly behind me, a sense of satisfication floods me as I scan my eyes over my garden making me roll my shoulders with awe.
I head up the path to my front door and quickly thrust my keys from my back jean pocket into the keyhole with such speed to try and keep my hands from freezing.
I quickly step in and inhale the sweet aroma of vanilla and sandalwood of my wax melt silently burning away on my fire place with a light smile, I gasp as I realise I'm letting in the cold air and quickly shut my front door behind me.
I exhale a relieved sigh as I remove my hood from my head and run my fingers over my hair, I slightly cringe as there are now more wispy bits of hair poking out of my ponytail, I roll my eyes and plunk my bag onto the cupboard next to the front window, I stretch my arms above my head and loudly yawn out my frustrations as I glance towards the TV.
I reckon Netflix is long overdue by now I can't even remember the last time I watched my TV series, I quickly set to work on setting up the TV and begin to put the kettle on ready for my mug of hot cocoa.

I begin to go back to my couch and stop in the doorway of the hall that leads to my bedroom and bathroom, I stare at my lively looking living room with unease, I hum out as my sheepskin throw lightly falls off my head and onto my shoulder, I scurry over to the couch and plop my throw and pillows off and go towards the curtains and yank them shut, I've always liked my privacy as much as I like my comfort.
I grin and land on the couch and begin to get myself settled within my throw and plumping up the pillows as I hear something either outside or in the house, so I freeze in my current position and strain my hearing to try and listen for the noise again.

Silence.

Silence is all that meets my ears, so I carry on with my duty of making my pillows fatter somehow, they are as flat as a pancake right now, I stand back up right and look at the cozy bundle on my sofa, I sigh as I look back up towards the clock on the wall.

Then my doorbell goes off with the Christmas tune that I set it to months ago, I half jump out of both my sheepskin and my own as I snap my head towards the door,
"Jesus scared the shit outta me", I slowly get up with my hand on my chest and I begin to tiptoe to the door hoping to get a peek at this person.
I lean forward to the peephole and look out to see a black hooded figure looking straight down at the bottom of the door, I hope he can't see my feet. The person's face is obscured from my view as the street lamp is directly behind him or her could be a woman for all I know. I lean back and redirect my gaze towards the clock on the beautifully decorated wall, it read 8:58pm.
I snap my head to the door as the increasingly annoying doorbell chimes out again, I frown as I look through the peephole. I silently watch as the hooded figures shoulders raise and quickly slump back down indicating a sigh, he turns around and heads back out my gate and turns the corner and starts walking down the street looking back at my house as he nears out of my view.
How weird.

"No way", I moan as I throw my head back with a sour face, I face back to the credits rolling on the screen, they only just ended the seasons I was watching on a cliffhanger,
"I hate cliffhangers", I mumble through a mouthful of popcorn, I look down as a piece falls out of my mouth to see little speckles of popcorn all over my throw, I gasp and quickly stand sending my throw across the floor, I quickly grab it and start to shake it,"Not my new sheepskin!" I gasp out as I turn it around and begin to inspect it within the light.
The throw is quickly forgotten as I hear the inspicible sound of a lock turning, my jaw goes slack and my eyes go wide as they land on my own front door lock being turned, from the outside.
"What the fuck?" I say more to myself than the actual lock itself, I drop my sheepskin at my feet and slowly start going towards the now ajar door, I quickly stop and bolt towards the kitchen as the hooded figure from earlier pokes himself through the door and charges towards me knocking down a lamp in the process.
I don't get lucky though, as soon as I make my way into the kitchen a body of pure muscle slams into me from the front knocking all the air out of me, my burglar takes this as a chance to whip me a around with my back to his front and fold his hand with a cloth around my mouth and nose, I gasp as the pungent smell from the chloroform attacks my lungs, I begin to kick and thrash about but it's too late as my vision quickly shuts down sending my eyes lolling to the back of my head and thrusting me into a world of silence once again.

Authors note:

Hello fellow readers, I have already written another book which you can read now as it is either fully completed or nearly completed, I'm going to be at least completing this first so by the time this is published the other book (modified) should be up.

But anyway, I hope you enjoyed the first chapter, it has been reworked as I wasn't very keen on the other version of this, don't forget to tell me what you liked and disliked and vote as it helps a lot more than you would think.

I wont be posting pictures of the characters as I prefer for your own imagination to picture them.

See you in the next chapter! 👋
