Introduction To Hangul

What Is 한글 (Hangul)

Hangul or Hangeul, meaning "Great Script" is the alphabetic system used for writing and reading the Korean language. Created by Sejong Daewang, before 한글 most Korean people were illiterate because they they could not afford to Chinese; where as the wealthy payed for themselves and children to learn the language. Since 한글 was created Korean were able to read and write and better understanding now that they have their own alphabet, that is quite simple and only takes a few hours to learn. The 한글 system consists of 24 letters including 14 consonants and 10 vowels. In this lesson we will be learning the consonants of 한글(Hangul)

Consonants

ㄱ- g/k as in gum or kite
ㄴ- n as is nine
ㄷ- d/t as in dime or time
ㄹ- r/l as in right or light
ㅁ- m as in mine
ㅂ- b/p as in bag or pan
ㅅ- s as in sand
ㅇ- ng silent when placed in the front of a vowel
ㅈ- j as in jump
ㅊ- ch as in change
ㅌ- t as in Taehyung
ㅍ- p as in pie
ㅎ- h as in Hoseok

Some consonants as shown here has two different meanings so keep that in mind.

Double Consonants

Double Consonants simply helps amplifies the sound of that particular letter. Like hard vowels do in English

ㄲ- gg
ㄸ- dd
ㅃ- bb
ㅆ- ss
ㅉ- jj

Consonants Names

Vowels can be read using the vowel ㅇ.
Example; ㅏ = ㅇ+ㅏ(아)

For double consonants just add 쌍
ㄲ= 쌍 + 기역(쌍기역)

ㄱ - 기역 (giyeok)
ㄴ - 니은 (nieun)
ㄷ - 디귿 (digeut)
ㄹ - 리을 (rieul)
ㅁ - 미음 (mieum)
ㅂ - 비읍 (bieup)
ㅅ - 시읏 (siot)
ㅇ - 이응 (eung)
ㅈ - 지읒 (jieut)
ㅊ - 치읓 (chieut)
ㅋ - 키읔 (kieuk)
ㅌ - 티읕 (tieut)
ㅍ - 피읖 (pieup)
ㅎ - 히읗 (hieut)

ㄲ - 쌍기역 (ssang giyeok)
ㄸ - 쌍디읃 (ssangdigeut)
ㅃ - 쌍비읍 (ssangbieup)
ㅆ - 쌍시옷(ssangsiot)
ㅉ - 쌍지읒 (ssangjieut)
