Kate's POV
I perch on the top of a building, typing furiously, trying to hack into the system. A voice fills my ears. "How's the hacking going, Kate?" Beck.
"Don't rush me."
"I'm not rushing you."
"When you ask me how it's going, you're implying that I'm taking too long. Let me work! Ultron wasn't built in a day." I snap.
"What?" He asks, confused.
"Just forget it." I grumble.
"Hey, Kate?" Peter's soft voice comes up next.
"Yes?" I say, trying not to show my annoyance.
"I love you."
It was so random and shocking, I almost dropped my laptop. "W-what? Peter not now."
"I need to know if you feel the same way."
"I can't right now. I'm trying to focus." I snap. I pull up the database, (if you couldn't tell, I know nothing about hacking lol) trying to block out his voice.
"Kate, it's a yes or no question. Do you love me?"
"Please... just drop it for now."
"I can't!" He snaps. I've never heard him this upset before.
"Parker, Stark. This is a mission. Not the dating game. Focus." Fury orders.
"You're right." I say. "Peter, just drop it."
"Tell me." He says firmly.
"I can't..." I say, tears filling my eyes.
"Why?"
"I DON'T KNOW!" I yell, certain the people at the festival could hear me. "I'm ashamed. That I wasn't good enough to save you or to save Dad. That I couldn't be there to see my little sister born. I'm ashamed that a part of me is worried my parents were trying to replace me. I'm hoping that I can make it up by saving everyone now."
It's quiet for a moment. Peter speaks up, his voice quieter now. "Everyone's got dead people, Kate. You know I do. My parents, my Uncle. You know how much I cared about your Dad. But you can't push the people you love away because you're afraid."
"Who said I love you?" I say without thinking. As soon as the hateful words leave my lips I want to suck them back in. I bite my lip, but it doesn't matter. They're out there.
"Peter, I didn't-"
"No, Kate, I know exactly what you mean." His voice sounds heartbroken. "I understand."
Peter's POV
Tears in my eyes, I grip the black dahlia necklace and prepare to throw it off the building and watch it shatter. But something stops me. "Guys, there's smoke around the statues."
"Energy spiking." Fury says, confirming my fear.
"We have seismic activity!" Maria exclaims. "Kate, kill the power now! Kate?"
Kate's POV
"Kate?"
My hands shake over the keyboard, tears streaming down my face. Why do I fuck everything up?
"Kate?"
"I can't!" I shout, throwing the laptop off the building.
Screams fill the air. Shit. I rush toward the sound and see the lava statue. "Okay, he's here!" I hear Peter shout. "Beck are you ready? You know what to do!"
"On your lead!" Beck calls.
Snapping back to attention, I jump down, helping some of the slower civilians get to safety. "It's absorbing the metal!" I holler. "The operator ran away! Get anybody off that ferris wheel!" It rains hell as I wait for the signal. Mysterio lands in a cloud of smoke. He stretches his arms out and green triangles rotate around his hands.
PTSD flashbacks stop me in my tracks. I think of Doctor Strange and the worst day of my life. My legs go numb as I remember everything. Peter dusting away in my arms, and me dusting away in my Dad's. How we reunited only to be torn apart again. How I dumped Peter. Remembering the tears in his eyes as I walked away.
My chest grows tighter as I try to breath. I fall to my knees, sobbing. Suddenly, I get knocked into a building, slamming hard into it. I shriek as I feel at least two of my ribs snap.
"Kate!" Peter screams. "Hold on, I'm coming!"
"Don't!" I say, struggling to breath. "I'm fine. I'm coming." I crawl, trying to get to my knees. Just get back up. I remember Nat's words. When someone knocks you down, just get back up. I barely see the fight play out in front of me before I pass out from the pain.
Peter's POV
I see the creature getting bigger from the wheel. Then I notice Ned and Betty in the carousal yelling for... Night Monkey? I scream on the comms. "Kate! Kate, please! Ned and Betty are in danger."
"What?" I hear on the other end. "I'm... coming!" She says in a tired voice.
Kate's POV
I get up, shaking off the dizzyness. I rush toward the ferris wheel. Peter and Mysterio continue flinging things at the beast. I see the wheel tilt way over to the side. I use my powers to keep it from tipping over. Beck yells in frustration.
He turns to us. "Whatever happens, I'm glad we met."
"The hell are you talking about?" I demand.
"What are you doing?" Peter asks.
"What I should have done last time." He yells out, stretching his powers to the max. It cuts through the elemental's chest. It turns green, collapsing, and disintegrating in an explosion of green. I gasp.
We won. But at what cost?
