I wait until the library finally opens and people start trickling in to slink out of the shelves and go into the main part of the library. I run into Mrs. Magic.
"Hey Anna, I didn't see you come in, how are you honey?" She asks.
"I'm okay. Will you be reading soon?"
She holds up a book: Claire and the Unicorn, "I was on my way, you coming?"
My stomach grumbles, "yeah, I'm going to go grab something to eat, then I'll come over."
She smiles. I turn towards the cafe, but before I can walk away, she presses a twenty dollar bill into my hand. I start to protest, but she shakes her head and walks away.
Does Mrs Magic know something? Like the fact that I'm homeless or a runaway orphan? I watch her go into the children's section.
But how? I get a muffin from the cafe, sort of relieved that I don't have to steal it,many bring it to the storytelling corner.
I start to daydream as I sit down on a beanbag. What if I read this book tomorrow? Will I have a unicorn. Probably. I suddenly smile, this is so awesome. I can visit any book, meet any character, go on any adventure.Mrs. Magic finishes the story and everybody applaudes.
Long after everybody leaves, I am still sitting there, thinking about how great tonight will be.
The last librarian leaves and the door shuts with a bang.
I sigh with relief, another successful night.
I move through the rows up books until I get to the Harry Potter series. I pick up the sixth book: Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince, and start reading the part when Harry is in his lessons with Dumbledoore.
I am sitting at a desk. An old man in blue robes, and with a twinkle in his eye is sitting across from me.
I hear a screach and turn around to see a huge, amazingly fiery rad and orange bird resting on a stand.Fawkes!
At least a hundred portraits are all around the room, filled with smiling and waving headmasters of the past. The sorting hat is positioned on a shelf, humming to itself and there are various magical objects around the room. I notice the pensive in one corner.
I am giddy with excitement now. I am with Dumbledoore. Albus Dumbledoore.
"Are you ready Harry?" He asks.
And then I remember that we are meeting to go into the pensive and look into the past.
"Uh...yeah," I answer.
He gets up, and I can now see that one of his hands is all black.
We walk over to the corner that the pensive is in. He grabs my hand, and starts learning into the bowl. Not sure exactly what to do, I follow his lead. There's a slight chilly, wet feeling. Then I'm on a hill, overlooking a little cabin. The dark mark is overhead.
Suddenly, I don't want to be here any more. I just realized I left my book back in Dumbledoores study though. It's too creepy. I know memories can't hurt you and stuff but...
"Dumbledoore..."
"Yes Harry?"
"We need to get out of here. Something's, something's not right," I lie.
He looks at me, "Very well."
And then we are back in his study.
"Are you alright Harry?" He asks.
"I'm not Harry," I suddenly blurt.
"What do you mean?"
I sit down and tell him everything.
"Have you always been this girl from another land where I am just a story?"
"No, It was just Harry before," I grab the book, "When I close this book, I will whisk out of Harry's body and I won't be here anymore."
He pondered for a moment, "Very well, Anna. I hope to be seeing you again soon. Come back any time,"
Fawkes screeches, and I snap the book shut.
I just met Dumbledoore.
"Woohoo!"
And suddenly, now that he knows, I want to tell him all the secrets I've been bursting to tell people. Because he won't be able to alert the cops in my world.
"Tomorrow night Dumbledoore, I'll be back. Make sure to save me a cup of tea," I say to no one in particular.
