002, new girls

"Meet the human brain"

The four boys stared in awe as Mr. Clarke began to explain.

"I know, it doesn't look like much, but get this," Mr.Clarke stated, "There are 100 billion cells inside of this miracle of evolution. 100. billion."

"Ah, this must be our new students," a warm and enthusiastic voice called out. The man standing in front of the class, who the principal had explained to be Mr. Clarke, a science teacher, smiled over at the girls, his demeanor seemingly unchanged by the fact that only four students in his class were even bothering to pay attention.

"Indeed, it is. All yours," the principal spoke in his hoarse voice, turning and leaving the two girls up the front of the class. Jessie planted her feet, keeping her shoulders pushed back and smile unwavering; confidence, that was her plan to win over some new friends.

Max, however, seeing that every set of eyes was now following the two girls, was quick to try and rush to one of the only spare seats, right in the back corner.

"Alright. Hold up, there," Mr. Clarke stopped the redhead, the other girl staying put in her spot overlooking the class. "You don't get away that easy. Come on up. Don't be shy," he directed Max with a wave of his hand.

"Dustin, drum roll," he directed, a boy up the front with his curly hair concealed in a cap closing his book, using the palms of his hands to drum against the cover. "Class, please welcome, all the way from sunny California, the latest passengers to join us on our curiosity voyage," the man enthusiastically spoke, "Maxine and Jessica." The drumming stopped.

"It's Max," she said softly.

"Sorry?"

"Nobody calls me Maxine. It's Max."

"Ah, well, all aboard, Max," he smiled at her, the girl wasting no time in rushing to the seat in the back corner. Turning to see the other girl still stood up next to him, Mr. Clarke smiled. "Let me guess... your friends call you Jess?"
