When the smoke infiltrated her lungs, she couldn't help but cough. The thick burning sensation made its way down her throat and into her chest. It hurt.
He suppressed a laugh.
He was hoping if she didn't know he found her amusing, she would feel unwanted in his presence. He was hoping she'd think it was awful, and maybe she'd leave.
But she didn't leave, nor did she put out the cigarette. She just smiled and tried again. This time when she brought it to her lips, she knew what to expect.
This time, she didn't cough and instead let the feeling envelope her like a warm hug. This time when she exhaled she exhaled more than smoke. She exhaled every worry she'd ever had.
He noticed. This troubled him.
