Dawnmist watched sadly as Spark ushered her kits closer to the camp entrance. It had been half a moon since the Final Battle, and Spark had decided to take her kits away from ThunderClan.
"I don't want my kits to become warriors." Spark had said defiantly.
Dawnmist and Spark had become strong friends over the half moon, and she was sad to see her go.
"Goodbye, Spark." Dawnmist twined tails with her friend for the last time. "I hope I see you again."
"You've been good company to me during my stay. Goodbye, Dawnmist." Spark licked her ear before taking her kits out of the camp.
Dawnmist took a different route to Spark, heading towards the Twolegplace. A lithe black she-cat was licking a paw on a fence.
"Hi," Dawnmist muttered. "Are you a kittypet?"
"Kittypet? Pfft. No. I'm a street cat." The she-cat replied.
"I'm a forest cat." Dawnmist informed.
"I've always wanted to meet one!" Salem said cheerfully.
The mood was catching. Dawnmist felt her spirits rising and her bad mood clearing.
"I've never seen a street cat either," Dawnmist purred. It had been the first time she'd purred since Spark had told her she was leaving, a few days ago.
"My whole family have been street cats. My great-grandmother was the most wily and smart street cat ever!" Salem boasted.
"Wow! What was her name?" Dawnmist said enthusiastically.
"Salem too."
"Oh. Wow." Dawnmist said, her enthusiasm dampened a little.
"I know. That's why I don't tell cats a lot." Salem replied.
"Okay." Dawnmist shrugged.
Dawnmist got to know Salem a bit better and finally decided to go back to her Clan. The next few days passed quickly. She kept leaving the Clan for long periods at a time, keeping her mind off Spark and the kits.
Maybe I should become a street cat with Salem.
Dawnmist appreciated Salem's way of living, how they all protected each other but weren't close.
I don't want to love again. If I love, I'll only be hurt again.
On one meeting, Salem had brought some friends over. "This is Brick, Flower and Pike."
"Nice to meet you," Dawnmist had mewed back.
"Sup." Brick had lounged around lazily.
All the street cats were well fed and capable hunters. While they sometimes at kittypet food, they also hunted for themselves and scrounged food out of Twoleg scraps.
I want to join them, but I have kin in ThunderClan. I'd miss my family too much.
Dawnmist felt embarrassed that she was considering leaving, but ThunderClan didn't feel like the Clan she had known when she first joined. It had been welcoming, helpful and friendly. Now it was lonely and cold.
"I want to join you, but I need to be with my family," Dawnmist confessed one day.
"That's fine!" Salem said understandingly.
"Thanks for understanding. You might as well be my best friend." Dawnmist sighed, her head drooping.
"I'll always be here for you." Salem promised.
