. As he had lost a lot of blood already hashirama was not able to use hashirama cells to regenerate. As hashirama is dying, madara says to him "you were a worthy opponent, hashirama. I hope we will be able to meet again in the afterlife."
After the fight, madara uses hashirama's cells to heal himself and awaken the rinnegan.
