You gasped in horror at the arrival of an Eldritch being so hell bent on destroying the world that reality itself scrambled to get out of its way. Its size dwarfed anything you had ever seen-save the Almighty Sinnohs-and its horned head tossed back in defiance as a triumphant roar rattled the air around you, shaking you to the very core as it ripped its way into your world from behind a man gone mad.
Even amidst the shadows, the creature had been glaring through incandescent eyes which cut crimson through even the brightest daybreak of the Hisuian morn. Its jagged wings seemed capable of piercing the very fabric of space and time as its cardinal spikes struck the air in one powerful beat. Even your Pokémon hesitated in its suffocating presence, in spite of your powerful bond and trust in one another, for they could sense your fear of this brand-new being. Terror clawing at your heart as this spawn of the shadows lashed out at your remaining team of Pokémon, tearing apart what was already left in shambles by your previous fight against him... against Volo.
Volo, a man you had come to care for greatly... one you had even grown to love during your travels. He was the one who provided you with healing and gave you useful items for free, he was the one to teach you the back strike so you could more easily capture Pokémon, he was the one to risk his life providing you wares before your fight against Almighty Sinnoh (for a fee of course, after all, he was risking his neck for you) and he was the only one to truly come to your side when you were banished from the Corp.
But there was more, there were plenty of times when he traveled by your side and seemingly showed up out of nowhere during your greatest times of need. It was uncanny really, how he always seemed to be exactly where you needed him even when you told no one where you were going... Ok, sure, you might tell the gate guard a general location but that was hardly enough information for someone like Volo to immediately track you down, much less know you were in trouble to begin with... and it happened all the time, in any weather, from the earliest hours of the day to the darkest hours of the night in all regions. During heavy rains to brutal snowstorms, he just always... seemed to know... like a guardian angel...
During these times, if you ever asked how he found you he would simply reply "Fate works in mysterious ways" before flashing you his iconic smile, the one that could melt your heart in an instant. In spite of his eerie ability to consistently show up at the right time, the matter remained that he always seemed to be there when you needed him.
After some time of these rescues, in your close proximity and gratitude, the two of you began camping together during your shared travels; you to study the Pokémon of the region and him to travel the land and investigate its ruins. In time, the two of you even began working together to unravel Hisui's mysteries. That had been a beautiful time for the both of you and another time of intense bonding and comradery. He was always so sly and intelligent in his ramblings, mysterious yet fun as he fawned over his love for the lore of the ancient past.
He was frequently found pouring over tracings of ruins and making connections between the many ancient relics you would visit, and you couldn't help but to smile and join him in his enthusiastic inquiries. After all, part of you... wanted to know about your world too, and his company was always so pleasant... As a result, the two of you wound up traveling together more often than not.
However, it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows when you traveled together. Every once in a while, you would sense something lurking in the dark, eyes burning into your very soul, chilling you to the very bone as your hair stood on end... late at night during times when the moon was particularly obscured by the cloudy sky and blotted out your surroundings and always when Volo had gone to his tent or left to patrol the perimeter of your campsite. When these conditions were met, an unknown movement would be detected, and you would grow uneasy in spite of your own combative prowess. For Arceus's sake, you had once wrestled a full grown Ursaring in the name of your research.... And won!... and yet, being alone without him, with an unknown glare so strong that it made you feel small... was unsettling.
After all, it could be an undiscovered Pokémon moving in for the kill... one which had yet to be documented or understood. Everyone knew that despite your potential for comradery a wild Pokémon was always dangerous to have around...
but the presence would soon recede into the darkness as you called upon your Umbreon to light up the night, therefore helping to ease your unsettled mind.
Your Umbreon, Eclipse, often served as a source of companionship, comfort, and light when whatever was lurking would retreat back into the darkness.... And as was characteristic of him Volo would magically appear soon after, getting back from some hike in the dark with a curious gaze or re-emerging sometime later from a different side of the dusk strewn encampment.
His Togekiss in particular took quite the liking to you during your travels, you would pet her little head feathers and snuggle her, and she would cry out in a beautiful chime like voice as she snuggled into your comforting embrace. Her feathers like velvet against your skin as you would chuckle and play with her. Volo always smiled at times like that, when you would play with his Pokémon who seemed to adore you oh so much... it actually made him a little jealous.
Unlike him, they were the only ones who seemed hesitant to fight you... perhaps that was why you managed to defeat them. That or, maybe it was because of your regular training matches against their trainer, seeing as how the both of you loved to train and battle your mons and usually trained against each other... or even fought in tandem against wild hordes of Pokémon which would attack you on your journeys.
As your remaining, weakened mon, fell in Giratina's wake you recalled them to their balls. Slowly backing away as the eldritch deity cried out in victory and lunged your way. You screamed in terror, crossing your arms over your face to protect yourself as the being's shadow descended upon your defeated frame. Its claws raised high enough to block out the sky as it prepared to strike you down. But just in time, without a moment's hesitation, a familiar voice screamed out.
"GIRATINA! WAIT!"
