Chelsea couldn't believe it. One moment, they were crowned Champions of the World; the next, they were defeated by Liverpool, putting an end to their amazing winning streak.
The Blues didn't want to stick around whilst the Reds were celebrating their victory. Kai Havertz and Timo Werner retreated to the safety of their dressing room along with the rest of their teammates to escape the cacophony of joyful celebrations, jubilant cheering, and upbeat music that resonated throughout Wembley Stadium. Kai kept his head down as he walked, trying to block out the celebratory cheers and keep his composure. However, he couldn't help but hear the heart-wrenching sniffles that came from his beloved friend, Timo, who was walking alongside him. Knowing how upset his friend was saddened Kai deeply but he was too dejected himself to come up with the words to console him.
When they arrived at the dressing room, the Chelsea team slumped down into their seats. The room was sombre and silent. The players were speechless after their sudden downfall. The uneasy silence was quickly permeated by the voice of the coach, annoyed the team's loss, whose criticisms cut deep. After the team talk, the players got ready to head for home. Kai and Timo had played for a while so they decided to have a shower along with some of the other players. Kai's runners-up medal weighed heavily around his neck. He was glad to take it off. After getting undressed, Kai headed towards the showers. He caught Timo's eye and tried to give a sympathetic smile to cheer him up; however, it was clear Timo was still inconsolable as he just looked away and went to wash up. As they were showering, Kai noticed that Timo's sniffles were louder than before. Kai realised the water flowing down Timo's cheeks were his tears too.
"Agggghhh!" Timo exclaimed whilst rubbing his eyes, "I got shampoo in my eyes!" He gave an unconvincing laugh.
Kai gave a light chuckle in return but he knew he wasn't fooled by Timo.
They finished washing up and got dressed before getting on the coach to go home. All that can be heard on the way back was the hum of traffic. The players were mostly on their phones, listening to music on their earphones, or trying to get some sleep.
Kai turned to Timo who was sitting next to him, watching a video on his phone with a blank expression on his face.
"Timo," whispered Kai, "come round mine tonight. There's something important I need to talk to you about."
Timo gave a light nod in agreement.
The coach arrived at Stanford Bridge stadium and the players said goodbye to each other before going home.
Kai and Timo arrived at Kai's house. The car journey there was just as quiet and sombre as the coach journey back to Stanford Bridge.
"Take a seat," said Kai as they entered his living room, "I'll go make us some tea." Kai went to the kitchen to put the kettle on before returning to sit next to Timo.
"Are you ok?" asked Kai.
"Is that seriously the important thing you wanted to talk to me about?" replied Timo with a forced smile on his face, "relax! I'm fine. I might have been a bit upset before but we all were. I'm fine now, honestly! Don't worry, Kai."
The sadness Kai could see in his eyes betrayed his true feelings.
"Timo, I'm not stupid. I've known you for a while now, you know," said Kai, gently shaking his head, "what's on your mind, mate? You can tell me anything. You know that."
"I'm fine, honestly," said Timo. He looked down at the sofa, trying to hide his face from his friend.
"Those tears weren't caused by shampoo, were they?" questioned Kai.
