I'm finally about to taste Tessa's sweet lips for the first time in four years when my damn phone starts to ring. "I'm sorry, Tess, I have to get that," I groan.

"It's fine, Hardin," she says and smiles her understanding smile.

"Hello?" I ask, annoyance clear in my voice. "No, I'm not going to some private meet and greet shit. I have other plans tonight," I huff and hang up.

"Hardin, if you have work stuff, you should go," Tessa encourages.

"Nope. This is exactly where I need to be tonight. That is, if it's okay with you." I search her eyes for the answer I hope for.

"Of course it is. You can just stay the night here. I mean... if it gets too late for your driver to pick you up." She blushes.

"I'd really like that." I smile.

"Um, I haven't even offered you a drink," she says, a bit flustered, and rushes to the kitchen. "I have some wine, or a beer... I don't know if you still drink..." she says nervously.

"Club soda would be great, if you have it."

"Oh, sure. So you don't—"

"No, Tess. I'm completely sober now."

"That's so great, Hardin."

"It's all thanks to you."

Tessa pours herself a glass of wine and walks back to the living room before passing me a glass filled with club soda. "Is it okay if I drink this in front of you?" she asks out of concern.

"Of course. I'm doing really well now, Tess. You don't have to worry."

"Okay, Hardin. Um, how long have you been sober?"

"I haven't touched any alcohol since my mum got sick. I mean, that just made me want to drink more, but I had to be sober for her. I was all she had."

"Hardin, I'm so proud of you. You just keep surprising me."

"Making you proud was all I ever wanted."

"Oh, Hardin," she says quietly and reaches up to gently rub her thumb over my cheek. She quickly removes her hand. "Sorry, it's just a habit." She quietly laughs.

"I don't mind." I smile.

Tessa and I finish our drinks and I muster all the courage I have inside me as I place my empty glass down on the coffee table. I gently take her wine glass from her hand and place it next to mine on the table. I reach up and gently cup her cheek and before anything else can interrupt us, I press my lips to hers.
