the early morning breeze brushed kaleb's dreads back from his face as he sat on the back porch of his home. smoking and his thoughts were consuming him as he took in the scenery.
yesterday's events still didn't settle into his reality just yet.
he thought with his studio session would help clear his mind, but it just pushed everything to the side for a while.
" your phone keeps ringing. " mariah mumbled as she pushed the sliding door open, holding his phone in one hand and rubbing her eye with the other.
kaleb didn't know whether to feel stupid for letting her stay another night or be glad she wasn't bugging him being on his mind 25/8.
he took the phone, letting out a loud sigh seeing that it was his mother blowing up his phone.
locking it, he tossed it inside his pocket, not caring to deal with her right now.
" i ain't mean fa' it to wake you up. " kaleb spoke looking up at mariah, taking a pull from his blunt.
" it's fine. " mariah spoke. " you okay out here? " she rubbed her arms as the breeze came in again.
" yeah i like looking at tha' sunrise. "
he took interest in small things no one ever seemed to notice about him. being that he was already a closed-off person, not many pressed the issue of getting to know him.
something kaleb always noticed.
" i remember you at sleepovers, always the first one up looking out the window. " mariah chuckled as she sat next to him.
kaleb eyes widened a little looking over at her making her laugh a little more.
it surprised him that she even remembered it.
it was a comfortable silence between the two for a minute. they both didn't know what else to say.
that was really the most conversation the two had since mariah came to his doorstep.
" when mama dani nem' coming back? " kaleb asked breaking the silence.
" tomorrow. " mariah huffed shaking her head.
she didn't want to face them just yet. even though they knew nothing, that alone ate at mariah.
maybe she could keep her miscarriage a secret from them forever, but she just felt so wrong doing that.
she was tired of letting everything be a secret.
learning that living in secret would never make her happy.
" i-um. " kaleb cleared his throat, feeling himself trip over his words.
" i really don't know what ta' say. ion' even like how we got ta' this point, but i ain't mad bout the baby. maybe we ain't need one right na'. " he spoke truthfully.
